First Posted: 3/9/2014 MORAGA, Calif. &#8211; Former Holy Redeemer and Plains American Legion baseball star Zach Ell had a big day in California, helping the Penn State baseball team to a 9-6 win over the St. Mary&#8217;s Gaels.
Ell made one of Penn State&#8217;s best defensive plays of the season to keep Saint Mary&#8217;s off the board in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner on first, St. Mary&#8217;s batter Anthony Gonsolin drove a ball deep to the right-center alley and Ell laid out to make a diving catch on the warning track to keep the Gaels&#8217; offense at bay.
A little later, Ell struck again when he led off the fifth inning with a double over the left fielder&#8217;s head, and later scored on Steve Snyder&#8217;s single to tie the game at 6-6.
