First Posted: 8/23/2014 It&#8217;s the Year of the Family in Dallas this weekend.
And that means plenty of fall activities that families can enjoy doing together at the Dallas Harvest Festival. The 12th annual event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, on and around Main Street.
Every year, the festival is like a giant family reunion for the Back Mountain, said Liz Martin, one of the event organizers.
Main Street will once again be transformed into a hometown community street fair, complete with a farmers market and a community stage, where you can sample treats from food vendors and purchase crafts.
There will be stage performances throughout the afternoon. And being that the word harvest is in the title, you can treat yourself to some fresh produce at the large farmers market.
Youngsters will be able to enjoy fun activities at the Children&#8217;s Corner, antique fire truck rides by the Dallas Fire Department and a petting zoo, sponsored by Blue Chip Animal Refuge, where kids can see white rabbits, ducks and pigs. The Whistle Pig Pumpkin Patch lets the children have some fun decorating pumpkins, getting an early start on their Halloween celebrations.
The Dallas school sponsors a Kiss the Pig fundraiser.
Gift certificates donated by local businesses will be given away.
The festival invites those attending to be pro-active in the fun with several contests involving signing, posing and pruning.
Enjoy Best of Open Mic (BOOM) on Friday, Sept. 12, beginning with sign-ups at 5:30 p.m. at the George M. Dallas Masonic Lodge 531, 60 Main St., Dallas. Family acts are welcome. Cash prizes will be awarded, as will an opportunity to perform live during the festival.
Generation to Generation will sponsor a special family-themed photo contest. The contest will feature three categories of photography: Best Overall Family Photo, Most Generations in Photo and Oldest Generational Photo. Area photographers and history experts will judge the contest; cash prizes will be awarded.
The annual Flower Display Competition will take place again this year among downtown businesses. Dallas merchants are invited to participate in the Dallas Harvest Festival&#8217;s annual Flower Display Contest. This year&#8217;s contest entries are &#8220;flowers of fall colors and natural.&#8221; Winners will be announced at the festival.
Those attending the festival are able to park at the following lots: Eastern Star Lodge, Foster Street; Dallas United Methodist Church, Church Street; Misericordia University, Health Sciences Building, Lake Street, and Back Mountain Memorial Library, Huntsville Road.
