Snow plow driver, wife charged in Vt. woman death

NEW YORK &amp;#8212; Ross Detwiler pitched five scoreless innings and the Washington Nationals beat New York 6-2 Tuesday, handing the Mets their first loss of the season on the same night they learned that David Wright had broken a finger. 
Detwiler (1-0), a surprise addition to the back of the Nationals, allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one. 
Ian Desmond homered off Dillon Gee (0-1) leading off the game, and Jayson Werth had four hits of the Nationals' 13 hits and drove in a run. 
New York said during the game that Wright's right pinky was broken a night earlier when he dived back to a base. 
<hl2 class="subhead" style="subhead">Dodgers 2, Pirates 1</hl2>
LOS ANGELES &amp;#8212; Andre Ethier hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the eighth inning, sending the Los Angeles Dodgers to a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in their home opener. 
Exactly 50 years after Dodger Stadium opened, Ethier hit a solo shot on his 30th birthday, a drive into the right-field stands off Jason Grilli (0-1). Ethier emerged from the dugout after his second homer of the season for a curtain call from the robust crowd of 56,000. 
Kenley Jansen (1-0) pitched the eighth, and Javy Guerra pitched the ninth for his third save, sending the Dodgers to a 4-1 start to their first season since resolving Frank McCourt's messy ownership tenure. The Pirates opened a nine-game trip with just five hits against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers' bullpen, and Andrew McCutchen grounded into a game-ending double play. 
<hl2 class="subhead" style="subhead">Cardinals 3, Reds 1</hl2>
CINCINNATI &amp;#8212; Carlos Beltran and David Freese homered again, and Kyle Lohse provided another stingy performance, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds. 
The defending World Series champions are 5-1 for the first time since 2008. 
Beltran, counted on to help make up for the loss of Albert Pujols, hit his third homer off Mike Leake (0-1). Freese, the World Series MVP, added a two-run shot off Leake &amp;#8212; also his third. 
 
<hl2 class="subhead" style="subhead">Brewers 7, Cubs 4</hl2>
CHICAGO &amp;#8212; Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee's five-run first inning, sending the Brewers to a victory over the Chicago Cubs. 
The Brewers had no problem adjusting to the weather on the chilly 40-degree evening. They sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning against Paul Maholm (0-1). 
<hl2 class="subhead" style="subhead">Braves 6, Astros 4</hl2>
HOUSTON &amp;#8212; Chipper Jones came off the disabled list and began his final season in the majors with a single and a two-run home run to help the Atlanta Braves get their first win of the season.
The nearly 40-year-old Jones didn't look a bit rusty in his return after missing Atlanta's first four games after surgery on March 26 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The switch-hitter singled in his first at-bat and belted the left-handed homer in the third inning to put the Braves up 3-1.

Detwiler shines, helps Nats win
