First Posted: 11/9/2013 KINGSTON &#8212; Once he found out he might have scraped a parked car while leaving a restaurant last week, Thomas Leary said he provided his contact information to the business.
Still police filed a citation against Leary, 62, president of Luzerne County Community College, for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident in his car provided by the school.
&#8220;I thought I did the right thing,&#8221; Leary said Saturday when reached at his residence on Church Street.
A new black Honda sedan was parked near his residence and the front bumper on the passenger side had streaks of a lighter colored paint on it from contact with another object.
Leary said he had not been drinking alcoholic beverages the night of Nov. 2 at Theo&#8217;s Metro restaurant on Mercer Avenue.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t take risks like that,&#8221; Leary said.
He said he received a phone call from someone after returning home from the restaurant and was told, &#8221; &#8216;You may have brushed a car.&#8217; &#8220;
He notified the restaurant and left his contact information. The restaurant confirmed that he contacted the kitchen.
&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know I did it,&#8221; he said of coming in contact with another car. The damage, he said he was told, was just a scrape.
He said that if he knew he scraped the other car he would have left a note on the windshield with his contact information, which complies with the state motor vehicle code section on accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property. The law also states the driver &#8220;shall without unnecessary delay notify the nearest office of a duly authorized police department.&#8221;
Police filed the citation with District Judge Paul Roberts in Kingston on Wednesday. The summary offense carries either a $300 fine or 90-day imprisonment or both.
