Gordon making most of unprecedented Chase chance

First Posted: 12/3/2013 KINGSTON &#8212; A Shavertown man who displayed a special sheriff deputy badge from Lackawanna County during a drug raid in October was arraigned Tuesday morning.
Kingston police and the Luzerne County Drug Task Force charged Mark D. Broody, 49, with possession of a controlled substance, criminal conspiracy and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arraigned by District Judge Paul Roberts in Kingston and released on $50,000 unsecured bail.
Police and drug agents detained Broody and arrested Barry James Gately, 44, when they raided Gately&#8217;s residence on Wright Avenue, Kingston, on Oct. 15.
Authorities allege they bought heroin from Gately on Oct. 9 and 11 as the reason to search his residence.
When Gately was arrested, he was allegedly in possession of 20 heroin packets with plans to sell several of them to Broody, who, authorities allege, displayed a special sheriff deputy badge from Lackawanna County.
Authorities detained Broody on Oct. 15 but he was not charged until today.
Authorities said he told them he received the badge during a ceremony by the Lackawanna County Sheriff&#8217;s Office when he was deputized as a special sheriff deputy some time ago.
A criminal complaint alleges Broody was in possession of a syringe and other drug paraphernalia when he was detained.
Gately is facing three counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, two counts each of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and a single count of criminal use of a communications facility in county court.
Broody is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 18.
