The Crestwood coach could see her team pressing for a tying goal and she didn&#8217;t want them to become discouraged as chances went unfulfilled.
&#8220;Lot of time!&#8221; Gemski exclaimed with 2:30 left in regulation and her team trailing. &#8220;Remember &#8230; two seconds!&#8221;
The defending state champs were pushed to limits they hadn&#8217;t seen this season before finally bursting through for a 2-1 victory in double overtime over Oley Valley on Tuesday.
&#8220;That was something, going back and forth like that,&#8221; Gemski said. &#8220;It was an extremely exciting game. We had opportunities and we were finally able to execute.&#8221;
Morgan Kile was the latest hero for a team which wrote amazing storylines on the way to the 2012 championship &#8212; a goal with two seconds left by Elizabeth Dessoye beat Selinsgrove and a Chandler Ackers goal in the second overtime against Greenwood sent the Comets to the state final last season.
Kile corralled a ball tipped by Maury Cronauer as Oley Valley looked to move upfield late in the second overtime. Kile finessed a lead pass through the seam to Cronauer up the right wing.
Cronauer&#8217;s return pass found Kile in the goal mouth, where she ripped a shot into the near-side corner for the victory.
&#8220;That&#8217;s something we&#8217;ve done since we started playing together back in fourth grade,&#8221; Kile said of the precision passing play with Cronauer. &#8220;That&#8217;s the best feeling, to pull it out after all that effort, going into two overtimes. That&#8217;s what it&#8217;s all about.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m probably the wrong person to ask,&#8221; Gemski replied when asked if she was nervous during the overtimes. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been around it so long, you see so many things. All you can ask is they give it their all and play hard. But I certainly was thinking positive thoughts.&#8221;
But it was Gemski&#8217;s plea that was answered &#8212; and answered quickly &#8212; by her charges. Crestwood took the ball on an errant clearing play by the Lynx and charged into the circle.
Marissa Surdy unleashed one of her trademark reverse stick shots that rattled the backboard to knot the game at 1 with 2:16 left in regulation.
Crestwood, 24-0, trailed for the first time since last year&#8217;s state semifinal against Greenwood when Oley Valley converted its seventh penalty corner of the first half.
The 23-4-1 Lynx used a four-player combination to weave the ball through the Comets defense. Thalia Williamson injected the ball to Samantha Buzalewski at the top of the circle. Buzalewski passed to her left to Megan Kida, who went across the goal to the far post, where Elaine Ritschard was waiting to slam the ball home.
&#8220;We&#8217;re not used to being down,&#8221; Kile said of the Comets&#8217; first deficit in 26 games. &#8220;Coach always tells us we start 0-0 every time we step back on the field.&#8221;
The Lynx goal was simply unstoppable. Anything else tried by Oley Valley, though, found Dallas Kendra. The goalie had 18 saves with four coming in the second overtime.
&#8220;It all starts with Dallas,&#8221; Gemski said of her team&#8217;s stingy defense. &#8220;Her touches on balls tonight were so crucial. She played her best game of the year so far.&#8221;
Crestwood advances to defend its state title Saturday against Wyoming Seminary, a 3-1 winner over Gwynedd Mercy. The Class 2A final will be noon at the Zephyr Sports Complex in Whitehall.
