Winner! Winner! Dorsett’s mark falls in Pitt victory

First Posted: 10/24/2013 PHILADELPHIA &#8212; Braydon Coburn broke a tie early in the third period, and Steve Mason made the lead stand up as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Rangers 2-1 on Thursday night for their second win of the season.
Matt Read scored a short-handed goal and added an assist, and Mason made 30 saves for Philadelphia (2-7), which snapped a four-game losing streak. The Flyers are still off to their worst start through nine games.
New York&#8217;s Cam Talbot was solid in net in his NHL debut, making 25 saves in place of injured regular Henrik Lundqvist, but the Rangers (2-6) lost for the fifth time in six games. They have one game left on their season-starting, nine-game road trip before hosting their home opener on Monday.
The Rangers, who got a goal from Brad Richards, thought they had gotten even at 2, but a video replay determined that J.T. Miller kicked the puck into the net.
Canucks 3, Devils 2, SO
NEWARK, N.J. &#8212; Mike Santorelli scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Vancouver Canucks edged the New Jersey Devils.
In a matchup of former teammates, Roberto Luongo got the best of Cory Schneider &#8212; who used to be his backup in Vancouver. Luongo turned aside Travis Zajac, Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias in the tiebreaker to make Santorelli&#8217;s goal stand up.
Bruins 2, Sharks 1
BOSTON &#8212; David Krejci tipped in a shot with eight-tenths of a second left in the third period to lift the Boston Bruins to a win over San Jose.
Jarome Iginla scored his first goal with the Bruins (7-2) and goaltender Tuukka Rask was outstanding, making 38 saves.
Patrick Marleau had San Jose&#8217;s goal, his eighth of the season. Antti Niemi stopped 15 shots.
Canadiens 4, Ducks 1
MONTREAL &#8212; Carey Price made 31 saves in the Montreal Canadiens&#8217; victory over the Anaheim Ducks.
Tomas Plekanec, Michael Bournival, Brian Gionta and Rene Bourque also scored for Montreal (6-4-0).
Patrick Maroon scored for Anaheim (7-3-0), while Jonas Hiller made 21 saves.
Lightning 6, Blackhawks 5, OT
TAMPA, Fla. &#8212; Martin St. Louis scored 1:16 of overtime and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Chicago Blackhawks.
St. Louis got the game-winner from in-close. The Tampa Bay captain also had an assist and moved past Neal Broten (923) for 93rd place on the career points list with 924.
Steven Stamkos scored a tiebreaking power-play goal as the Tampa Bay went up 5-4 at 17:31 of the third.
Chicago&#8217;s Jonathan Toews was credited a game-tying goal with 1:49 left in the period after the Lightning put the puck into their own net.
Penguins keeping rookie D Maatta
PITTSBURGH &#8212; Olli Maatta is sticking with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The team announced Thursday the 19-year-old defenseman will remain with the club indefinitely rather than return to his junior team, the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. The Penguins could have sent Maatta back down and pushed back his rookie status until next year.
Instead, Maatta remain in Pittsburgh and enter the first year of his entry-level contract. If he stays more than 40 games, he can become a free agent by age 25.
Maatta, who is from Finland, has one goal and two assists while averaging around 15 minutes of ice time a game for the Penguins. The 22nd overall pick in the 2012 NHL entry draft has wowed coach Dan Bylsma with his skating and impressed teammates with his ability to adapt quickly to the sport&#8217;s highest level.
