First Posted: 6/25/2013 WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Restaurateur Pat Greenfield was one of seven recipients awarded for going the extra mile to enhance the community at the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce Awards Luncheon Tuesday at the Genetti Hotel and Conference Center.
When an electrical fire destroyed Grico&#8217;s Restaurant and Catering in Exeter nearly two years ago, owner and chef Greenfield was ready to retire, but Grico&#8217;s patrons were not willing to give up the iconic restaurant.
At their urging &#8212; and a desire to keep her loyal staff employed &#8212; Greenfield decided to rebuild the Wyoming Avenue establishment.
The interior was redone, its original tin ceiling and trademark 1930&#8217;s bar were restored and the dining room was expanded when it reopened to applause in February. On Tuesday, the project received the chamber&#8217;s Renovation and Restoration Award.
These businesses and schools also were recognized:
&#8226; Misericordia University&#8217;s Campus Enhancement Project received the Community Enhancement Award for improving and constructing athletic facilities and residential halls, a $14 million project. Included was a field house, a baseball field and a suite-style residence hall. Improvements also were made to McGeehan Field and Mangelsdorf Field. Misericordia University added common areas to expand amenities to allow student and community use.
&#8226; The First Keystone Community Bank&#8217;s Kingston branch received the Interior Design Award. The new branch project was in direct response to feedback from customers who were looking for more convenience and easier access. Its interior has three private offices and a small conference room that frame a circular, rotunda-like lobby.
&#8226; The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for PNC Field were awarded the New Construction Award. The new field includes a team store, a sound system, a high-definition scoreboard and a Kid Zone site. The new environmentally friendly field has 36 points of sale, two bars and a picnic and club area.
&#8226; Sallie Mae was given the Renovation and Restoration award. Sallie Mae has renovated its building&#8217;s interior and exterior. Its kitchen was remodeled, and its cubicle system was replaced. The fitness room was expanded and outfitted with mats, resistance equipment and other exercise necessities. Parking lots and walkways were repaired and the roof was replaced.
&#8226; Luzerne County Community College&#8217;s Francis S. and Mary Gill Carrozza, R.N. Health Sciences Building was awarded the Environmental Enhancement Award. It was renovated to relocate LCCC&#8217;s nursing, dental hygiene, dental assisting, respirator therapy, surgical technology and emergency medical services programs from the main campus.
&#8226; The Diamond City Partnership received the &#8220;I Believe Award&#8221; for its positive impact on Downtown Wilkes-Barre. It has a full-time crew working to keep the area clean. In addition, the partnership manages a grant program to businesses and facilitates downtown business development.
