NANTICOKE &#8212; A broken elevator in Nanticoke Towers apartment complex has made getting in and out of the building a challenge for residents in the last couple of days.Nanticoke Housing Authority executive director Doug Paper explained that a mechanical malfunction caused the elevator to go out of commission on Saturday.He said that the maintenance department got a new part, and expected the elevator to be back in service by the end of the day.Pape said it was the first issue that the building has had with the elevator since 2013. To help residents, the authority posted notices in the building with contact information should they need help getting in or out of the building.&#8220;Obviously, it&#8217;s an inconvenience,&#8221; he said.Pape explained that Nanticoke Towers is an older building designed to hold only one elevator. The authority considered adding a second elevator, but Pape said the costs of the project could have topped $1 million.Instead, Pape said the authority has been in the planning process of installing individual chair lifts in the building&#8217;s stairwells &#8220;as a backup plan&#8221; should the elevator go out of commission again.&#8220;We&#8217;re just about complete with our due diligence on that,&#8221; Pape said, adding that the process has involved getting quotes and becoming educated on the equipment.&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of the best option at this point that we can do,&#8221; he said.
