First Posted: 1/24/2013 (AP) Newly released investigative material shows that a Northern Michigan University soccer player who drowned during a team workout in November had epilepsy and needed medication to avoid seizures.
Police reports, witness statements and copy of a 911 call released to The Associated Press show that 18-year-old Arianna Alioto may have had a seizure as recently as last summer.
The medical examiner's office ruled Alioto's death an accidental drowning. It didn't mention her epilepsy or blame any health condition for contributing to her death.
The Columbia, Mo., freshman's death stunned the Northern Michigan campus. Alioto was reportedly a decent swimmer and her drowning went unnoticed by her teammates, her coach and a lifeguard.
A student spotted Alioto through a window floating face-down in the pool after the area had closed.
