First Posted: 6/11/2013 DUPONT &#8212; Borough Council voted Tuesday night to propose a new four-year contract with the municipality&#8217;s seven part-time police officers.
The proposal will now be reviewed by legal representatives from the borough and the police department before any vote can take place.
Officials from Dupont as well as the city of Pittston had, earlier in the year, discussed the possibility of Pittston officers assuming patrolling activities within the borough, but an agreement was never finalized.
Council President Stanley Knick refused to go into specifics as to why the deal broke down, but stated it was the borough&#8217;s preference to continue with a localized police force.
Councilman Bernie Zielinski was the only councilmember to speak out against the new contract and criticized the roughly $20,000 price of arbitration. His was the sole vote against paying the arbitrator.
He said he believed the contract could possibly hamper future efforts to enter into a regional police force, despite the insistence to the contrary from the rest of the council and Mayor Daniel Lello.
The Greater Pittston Area regional police force that Zielinski referred to has so far been spoken of only hypothetically by representatives from several communities in that area.
In other matters, the council approved the purchase of 1,300 new recycling bins from Orbis Containers at $8 each. Borough residents will be able to retrieve them at no cost from the borough building once they are available.
