First Posted: 9/16/2013 PITTSBURGH &#8212; Andrew Cashner carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and faced the minimum 27 batters in a one-hitter that sent the San Diego Padres past the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 on Monday night.
Cashner (10-8) retired his first 18 batters before Jose Tabata grounded a clean single into right field leading off the seventh. Tabata was erased when Andrew McCutchen grounded into an inning-ending double play, and the right-hander cruised the rest of the way for his first complete game in 31 career starts.
Cashner struck out seven, did not walk a batter and threw 97 pitches. He also scored from second on a single, sliding home with the second run of the game, moments before giving up Tabata&#8217;s hit.
The Pirates lost for the second time in eight games after entering the day tied for first place in the NL Central with the St. Louis Cardinals, who played later at Colorado.
Kyle Blanks, Ronny Cedeno and Rene Rivera each had two hits as the Padres won for the ninth time in 13 games. They are 17-3 in their last 20 at PNC Park.
A.J. Burnett (8-11) took a shutout into the seventh but wound up with the loss. He allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings, with three walks and eight strikeouts.
The Pirates had won each of Burnett&#8217;s previous five home starts.
San Diego broke through for two runs against Burnett in the seventh. Cedeno and Rivera opened the inning with singles, and Cashner bunted into a fielder&#8217;s choice that left runners at the corners.
Will Venable hit a sacrifice fly, and Cashner scored on Jedd Gyorko&#8217;s single to left.
The Padres left runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth.
Reds 6, Astros 1
HOUSTON &#8212; Johnny Cueto threw five scoreless innings in his return from the disabled list and Zack Cozart homered and drove in four runs to help the Cincinnati Reds to a win over the Houston Astros.
Pitching for the first time since straining the muscle below his right shoulder on June 28, Cueto (5-2) allowed five hits and struck out five with one walk for the win.
Cincinnati moved five games ahead of Washington for second NL wild card.
Cozart got things going for the Reds with his two-run shot to left field in the second inning. He added a two-RBI single in the fourth.
The return of Cueto, Cincinnati&#8217;s opening day starter the past two seasons, could be a boost to the Reds as they make a push toward the postseason.
Phillies 12, Marlins 2
PHILADELPHIA &#8212; Cliff Lee had three hits, knocked in a career-high four runs and struck out a season-high 14 to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a win over the Miami Marlins.
Lee (14-6) stroked a two-run, bases-loaded single to cap off a six-run third inning and also hit his first career triple in the fifth. Chase Utley, who also drove in four runs, hit a long three-run homer in the third.
On the mound, Lee allowed two runs while scattering eight hits and walking none, at one point retiring 11 straight en route to winning his fourth consecutive decision. The left-hander&#8217;s 14 strikeouts marked his fourth double-digit strikeout game this year.
Lee is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last six starts and 5-1 with a 2.29 lifetime ERA against Miami. He&#8217;s also a career .391 hitter against the Marlins.
Philadelphia has won six in a row over Miami.
In his first major-league start, Sam Dyson (0-1) allowed seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out only one. He struggled to find control, with just 34 of 63 pitches going for strikes.
Utley got the Phillies started with an RBI groundout in the first. His 17th homer in the third gave them a four-run lead.
Later in the frame, Cody Asche drove in a run with a single to right field. Giancarlo Stanton&#8217;s throw home was on the mark, but Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis couldn&#8217;t handle it before being barreled over by Domonic Brown.
After Roger Bernadina drew a walk to load the bases, Lee singled to score two more and chase Dyson from the game. In all, 11 Phillies went to the plate in the inning.
Darin Ruf hit a two-run homer, his 14th of the season, in the sixth. He finished with two hits and three runs scored.
The Marlins&#8217; first run came in the fifth inning, when Adeiny Hechavarria singled to bring home Justin Ruggiano, who doubled. Ruggiano also had an RBI double in the sixth.
Rays 6, Rangers 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. &#8212; Rookie Wil Myers homered and had three RBIs, Alex Cobb pitched eight solid innings, and the Tampa Bay Rays took the lead for the first AL wild-card spot by beating the Texas Rangers.
Tampa Bay and Texas started play one-half game ahead of Cleveland, which was at Kansas City, in race for the two wild-card spots.
Myers had a second-inning solo shot and hit a two-run double during a four-run fifth. Cobb (9-3) allowed two runs, six hits, one walk and had 10 strikeouts.
Matt Garza (9-6, 3-5 with Texas) gave up six runs and eight hits over 4 1-3 innings to lose his third straight start for the Rangers, who have lost seven in a row and are 2-12 in September.
The announced crowd was just 10,724. The Rays entered with the major&#8217;s lowest home attendance average of 18,747.
Tampa Bay went up 6-2 in the fifth. After James Loney and Evan Longoria both had RBI singles against Garza, Myers drove in two with a double off Jason Frasor.
Garza, who was the MVP of the 2008 AL championship series when Tampa Bay beat Boston, pitched against the Rays for first time since being traded to the Chicago Cubs on Jan. 8, 2011. Texas obtained the right-hander from the Cubs on July 22.
The Rays took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Desmond Jennings&#8217; sacrifice fly.
Texas pulled even at 2 during the fifth when Mitch Moreland, mired in an 0 for 22 slide, doubled and scored on Ian Kinsler&#8217;s double. Kinsler was caught attempting to steal third to end the inning.
Myers put the Rays up 1-0 on his 13th homer, an opposite-field drive to right in the second.
Tigers 4, Mariners 2
DETROIT &#8212; Rick Porcello struck out 10 in six innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners to move a step closer to their third straight AL Central title.
Victor Martinez broke a 1-all tie in the sixth with a run-scoring single, and Omar Infante followed with his own RBI single.
Porcello (13-8) allowed a run and five hits with two walks, falling one strikeout short of his career high. Drew Smyly got five outs in relief and Jose Veras finished the eighth.
Joaquin Benoit pitched a hitless ninth for his 21st save in 21 chances.
The Tigers entered with a five-game division lead over Cleveland.
Joe Saunders (11-15) pitched well until the sixth, when he got two outs before a walk and three hits chased him from the game.
Abraham Almonte homered for Seattle, which has lost seven of eight.
It was tied at 1 in the sixth when Miguel Cabrera walked and Prince Fielder followed with a single. Martinez&#8217;s single up the line in right field scored Cabrera, and Infante lined a single to left to make it 3-1.
That rally made a winner of Porcello, who has bounced back nicely after giving up eight earned runs in a 20-4 loss to Boston on Sept. 4.
Porcello pitched his first career complete game in a win over the Chicago White Sox last Tuesday, and he was sharp against the punchless Mariners as well.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first when Torii Hunter and Cabrera hit back-to-back singles, and Hunter came home on a wild pitch. After that mistake, Saunders quieted Detroit, allowing no more than one baserunner in any inning until the sixth.
But it was a frustrating finish for Saunders, who allowed six runs over three innings in his previous start against Houston. He ended up yielding three runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings this time.
