First Posted: 1/30/2013 PLYMOUTH &amp;#8211; Within a tale of two halves was a tale that could determine Wyoming Valley West's fate for the rest of the high school boys basketball season.
Attitude, Valley West coach George Reimiller said. Once we get our attitude straight, we're OK.
Riding a second-half surge sparked by Larry Anderscavage, the straight-shooting Spartans rallied back from a 13-point deficit in the first half Tuesday and roared past the Tunkhannock Tigers 73-55.
But it was a demoralized Valley West group that sputtered out of the gates and fell far enough behind that the Spartans could sense their unbeaten season within the Wyoming Valley Conference Division I was in jeopardy.
It's not like we were nervous, Anderscavage said. I don't want to say we gave up in the first half, but we kind of did.
But the Spartans, 12-5 overall, weren't quite ready to surrender their 9-0 divisional record so quickly.
Especially not the McCue cousins, Chris and Evan, who split Valley West's final 12 points of the first half and brought the Spartans within 33-30 at the break.
After Valley West fell behind 31-18 with under three minutes remaining in the second quarter, starting guard Chris McCue popped a three-point basket to start a 12-2 run for the Spartans that ended the first half &amp;#8211; then added another three-pointer just before intermission.
In between, Evan McCue came off the bench and drilled a three-point shot of his own, then added a three-point play.
They scored the last 12 points. That brought us back, Reimiller said. They were the spark we needed.
Anderscavage and the rest of the Spartans turned it into an inferno that singed the upset hopes of Tunkhannock (4-5 Div. I, 5-11).
Anderscavage opened the second half by drilling a three-pointer that gave the Spartans their first lead since the opening minutes, 35-33, and Valley West was off and running. By the end of the third quarter, Valley West opened a 57-48 lead, as Anderscavage scored eight points in the period while Lucky Williams and Jaquan Ingram added six points apiece.
It gave me a lot of confidence. In the first half, I shot a lot of shots and it wasn't really falling for me, said Anderscavage, who scored 15 points to join Brett Good for team-high honors and piled up 13 of them in the second half. I was kind of down on myself.
Tunkhannock's sharp, smart and swift passing game put Valley West down quickly at the start.
 Brian Stephenson delivered seven points in the first quarter as the Tigers charged to a 14-12 lead, then hit six more in the second period as Tunkhannock started to assume control. Austin Yanora popped two treys in the period, and two foul shots from Adam Billings boosted Tunkhannock's lead to 31-18 as the clock dropped under the three-minute mark in the first half.
That's when the Spartans came storming back.
You've got to come ready to play as soon as the ball is thrown up at center court, Reimiller said. In the first half, you know who was ready to play. Tunkhannock. We need to start playing in the first minute all the way through the 32nd minute.
But in the minutes when its perfect divisional record was in danger, Valley West simply turned it on.
