Boat rolls backward at Ohio amusement park; 7 hurt

First Posted: 4/17/2013 3:22:00 PM UNION TWP. &#8212; The Northwest Area School Board voted unanimously Wednesday night on a five-year contract extension for Superintendent Ronald Grevera and gave him a &#8220;distinguished evaluation,&#8221; which carries with it a 3 percent salary bonus.
Grevera was hired during the 2010-2011 school year at $90,000 per year. He has been given salary increments of $2,000 per year, bring his current basic compensation up to $94,000.
Board President Randy Tomasacci commended Grevera as &#8220;an extremely hard worker who has been a positive force for the school district.&#8221;
In another matter, Tomasacci said that at a pre-meeting executive session, discussion centered on completion of the sale of the Garrison Building in Shickshinny, which, Tomasacci said, should go to closing next week.
The building was sold at public auction last November for $55,000.
In other decisions:
* The board renewed a contract with Nutrition Services, Inc. to provide student food services.
* A bid of $4,800 was accepted from R. K. Masonry for brick work repairs at the intermediate school.
* Pending approval of the state Department of Environmental protection, the board acted to solicit bids for a water filtration system at the Northwest primary school.
* In conjunction with on-going student safety measures, high school Principal Ryan Miner said the classrooms have been numbered to expedite response time in the event of an emergency and a lockdown drill has been scheduled in the near future.
* Miner also reported that required Keystone Exams have been scheduled in May.
* In compliance with the collective bargaining agreement with the Northwest Education Association, head coaching positions in boys and girls basketball will be posted in-house.
* The Albert Melone Co., district business consultant, was authorized to advertise for bids for a tax anticipation note for the 2013-2014 school term.
* Tomasacci said the finance committee and Melone are working on a 2013-14 budget that should be presented at the May 15 meeting. Tomasacci said issues with the operating budget of the Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 contributed to a delay in the district&#8217;s budget process.

Northwest extends superintendent’s contract for 5 years
