J&J to pay $2.5B to settle hip replacement suits

First Posted: 1/19/2013 WILKES-BARRE &amp;#8211; Flowers and candles have been placed at the scene where two men suffered fatal gunshot wounds early Thursday morning on Scott Street.
Jamel Martin, 20, of South Welles Street, Wilkes-Barre, died late Thursday afternoon &amp;#8211; about 14 hours after Leroy Michael Smith, 42, of North Empire Street, Wilkes-Barre, was found fatally shot. Martin died at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.
 Martin and Smith were found at about 2:30 a.m. in front of 131 Scott St., near Don Kasper's Watering Hole tavern, which was closed at the time, city police said. 
A red bandanna with Smith's nickname, Tone, and the words, Loved and never forgotten was hung on the tavern's outside wall. 
Martin sustained a gunshot wound to his head and Smith was shot in the chest. Smith had been pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 a.m. by Acting Coroner William Lisman. 
An autopsy by forensic pathologist Dr. Gary Ross revealed Smith died from multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of death was ruled a homicide, according to Lisman. 
An autopsy on Martin had not yet been scheduled, but most likely will take place on Monday, Lisman said. 
A city police officer patrolling the area heard gunfire and responded to the scene, finding Martin and Smith. 
A woman who identified herself only as Megan placed flowers at the site in memory of her friend Smith. He was a nice, caring and quiet, good person, Megan said. 
Megan had known Smith for about three years, and did not know Martin, she said. Smith often patronized Don Kasper's Watering Hole, she said. 
Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said the investigation has indicated Martin and Smith did not shoot each other. 
City and county detectives are actively investigating, she said. No charges have been filed. 
According to court records, Martin was released from the county correctional facility on Jan. 4, when Judge Fred Pierantoni III sentenced him to 180 days time served on charges of receiving stolen property. 
Hanover Township police charged Martin with operating a stolen motorcycle on West Liberty Street on March 15. The motorcycle was reported stolen from a residence on North Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre, on March 12, according to court records. 
Martin was sentenced on Nov. 20 to one-year probation on a retail theft charge filed by security at Macy's Department Store in the Wyoming Valley Mall. Martin was accused of stealing Polo jeans, socks and underwear from the store on Jan. 29, 2012, the complaint says.
