<p>HANOVER TWP. &#8212; Restaurateur David Joseph received a warm reception when he opened his second Haystacks location recently.</p><p>And then some.</p><p>&#8220;I had no idea we were being watched throughout the renovation process,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The area (public) made us feel so wanted and appreciated.&#8221;</p><p>Three weeks ago, Joseph opened Haystacks in the former Ma&#8217;s Family Restaurant location on the Sans Souci Parkway, across from the Hanover Mall.</p><p>In the first three hours, Joseph said he nearly reached the building&#8217;s full capacity limit.</p><p>In the days following what was supposed to be a quiet restaurant opening, Joseph said the new restaurant received flowers and thank-you cards from residents and local businesses.</p><p>&#8220;It was like a &#8216;thank you for being in our neighborhood&#8217; type of thing,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Joseph, the owner of Haystacks, said his first location on Wilkes-Barre Township Boulevard served up family-style meals for the past 17 years.</p><p>&#8220;We were there before the arena and everything else,&#8221; he said.</p><p>He never seriously considered opening a second location until the Hanover Township building&#8217;s owner told him of his hopes of getting a long-term tenant in the building.</p><p>Ma&#8217;s Family Restaurant occupied the building for about three years, Joseph said.</p><p>After checking it out, Joseph determined the location had everything going for it &#8212; a high traffic area &#8212; augmented by a traffic light at the intersection entrance &#8212; and he was in the position to provide staffing.</p><p>But the building needed a facelift.</p><p>Gutting out the inside and building to suit, Joseph recreated the family-style atmosphere similar to his Wilkes-Barre Township restaurant.</p><p>His top chef and server transitioned to the new facility, ensuring that the same quality of food and service stayed constant between the two locations.</p><p>&#8220;We scratch-cook everything,&#8221; Joesph said. &#8220;We never bring in canned or frozen vegetables. We are doing it the way cooking was meant to be done. There is no push-button cooking here.&#8221;</p><p>The result has been a full house and customers who &#8220;won&#8217;t leave here hungry.&#8221;</p><br>Reach Eileen Godin at 570-991-6387 or on Twitter@TLNews.
