<p>RICE TWP. &#8212; Township Supervisor Mark Taney resigned from the board, less than two years when he was elected and 10 days after he was questioned by police about discharging a firearm in a residential area.</p><p>Township Solicitor Jack Dean confirmed today Taney submitted a resignation letter dated June 30. No reason was given by Taney to why he resigned, Dean said.</p><p>The letter was given to a township employee on Wednesday.</p><p>Dean said he was unable to release Taney&#8217;s resignation letter because township Supervisors Marcia Thomas and Miller Stella Jr. had not been given copies.</p><p>A police incident report anonymously sent to the Times Leader this week indicates Taney was questioned about discharging a firearm outside his residence near the township municipal building and a township park on Church Road on June 20.</p><p>The officer wrote in the report that he heard &#8220;what sounded like automatic weapons being fired also I could smell gun powder.&#8221;</p><p>The officer walked onto Taney&#8217;s property announcing himself as a police officer. Taney became &#8220;very irate yelling that he was doing nothing wrong and knew his rights,&#8221; the report says.</p><p>Taney handed an AR-15 rifle to the officer to check if the firearm was an automatic. Taney also asked the officer how far he needed to be away from an occupied structure as the officer didn&#8217;t know but believed anyone discharging firearms needed to be 1,000 feet away.</p><p>The officer later learned from police Sgt. Harry Ehret that the township has no ordinance about discharging firearms in a residential area.</p><p>Taney was not charged with the incident.</p><p>Taney, a Democrat, was elected to the supervisor board in the 2013 November general election. He served as vice-chairman of the board with Thomas as chairman.</p><p>Taney, Thomas and Miller could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.</p><p>Dean said the township has no ordinance that prohibits the discharge of firearms in a residential area.</p><br>Reach Ed Lewis at 570-991-6116 or on Twitter @TLEdLewis
