<div class="metaInfo"><bylineMeta><p>By James O&#8217;Malley</p><p>jomalley@www.timesleader.com</p></bylineMeta></div><p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A former educator convicted of having sex with a student wants to file an appeal outside the allotted timeframe.</p><p>Stephen Stahl, 48, of Hunlock Creek, is serving a six to 23 month sentence in Luzerne County Correctional Facility having been found guilty of a single misdemeanor count of corruption of minors.</p><p>Judge Michael T. Vough sent him to prison on March 23 and Peter Paul Olszewski Jr. withdrew from the case as his attorney the same day.</p><p>According to a petition filed Thursday in Luzerne County Court, Stahl&#8217;s application to the county Office of the Public Defender was not received and approved until June 23.</p><p>The allowed period for appeal elapsed in this time.</p><p>It is believed that attempted correspondence with the office in the meantime was not received, the petition says.</p><p>A jury in January convicted Stahl, siding with a now 27-year-old woman who alleged she and the former Coughlin High School teacher and wrestling coach engaged in an 18-month sexual relationship beginning when she was a 16-year-old student.</p><div class="metaInfo"><shirttailMeta>Reach James O&#8217;Malley at 570-991-6390 or on Twitter @TL_omalley.</shirttailMeta></div>
