<p>HAZLETON &#8212; First, you spread strawberry cream cheese onto a whole-grain bagel. Then you add two blueberries for eyes and two strawberry slices for ears.</p><p>&#8220;It looks like a cat,&#8221; 8-year-old Gina Gad said, looking at her almost-finished creation.</p><p>&#8220;But, here, add this to the middle,&#8221; one of the grown-ups at the Hazleton One Community Center suggested, handing Gina a banana slice that suggested a perfectly round snout.</p><p>Soon it was clear Gina and the other children in a &#8220;Flying High with Food, Fun &amp; Fitness&#8221; mini-camp each had made a pig face that was not only nutritious but fun to eat.</p><p>Oh, yes, by the way, &#8220;it tastes good,&#8221; Gina reported.</p><p>And, it&#8217;s better for you than candy, her 12-year-old brother, George, said.</p><p>Alicia Kaiser and Megan Lasko, two interns from the Commission on Economic Opportunity who co-led the mini-camp, were glad kids were getting the message about some foods being better for you than others.</p><p>During previous sessions, Kaiser said, snacks included such ingredients as sunflower-seed butter and hummus with olives and green peppers to suggest lady bugs or whole-grain pretzel sticks to stand in for spider legs.</p><p>When the kids made pig faces on a recent Friday morning, Lasko explained the whole-grain bagel provided more good-for-you fiber than a typical white-flour bagel and the natural sugars from the fruit give you energy for exercise.</p><p>Speaking of exercise, Kaiser asked the children what kind they like.</p><p>&#8220;I walk with my brother,&#8221; said 10-year-old Jandeliz Vasquez. &#8220;We walk the dog.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I do push-ups when I&#8217;m at home,&#8221; 6-year-old Lorenzo Rattray chimed in.</p><p>&#8220;I do a little bit of gymnastics,&#8221; Gina Gad said.</p><p>Distributing small portions of candy, just to prove a point, Kaiser and Lasko gave each child anywhere from one to five Skittles and then told them to do 10 jumping jacks for each Skittle they had eaten.</p><p>Some children were done after 10, some after 20 or 30. Gina Gad jumped 50 and said she wanted to do more.</p><p>There was no problem with her doing more, the leaders told her. But they wanted everyone to think about how the more you eat, the more you should move.</p><p>&#8220;What you put in your body affects how much exercise you need,&#8221; Kaiser said. &#8220;Can you imagine if you ate a whole pack of Skittles?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;The best thing I like to eat is fruit,&#8221; 11-year-old Mia Rodriguez said. &#8220;Fruit is fresh.&#8221;</p><p>As she watched the children eat their fruit-studded, open-face bagel sandwiches, program director Elaine Maddon Curry said dozens of mini camps are scheduled this summer at the Hazleton One Community Center.</p><p>While July offerings include chess, book binding, debate, LEGOs, a fishing competition, hair and nail care, the nutrition classes and &#8220;conversations for English language learners about topics important to teens,&#8221; the August calendar includes lessons in archery, gymnastics, writing, yoga, puppetry, cheerleading, ballet and jazz, and leadership.</p><p>For adults, there are classes in citizenship and English as a second language.</p><p>Located in the former Most Precious Blood Elementary School on East Fourth Street, the Hazleton One Community Center is part of the Hazleton Integration Project Inc., which Hazleton native and Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon &#8212; he&#8217;s also Maddon Curry&#8217;s cousin &#8212; established primarily as a way for young people from different backgrounds to come together.</p><p>There are no income restrictions, Maddon Curry said. Everyone is welcome to attend the free camps, which are taught by volunteers and mostly aimed at children ages 5 to 14, although a few are designed for older teens.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to make children excited about learning,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s all about enrichment, but in the end it&#8217;s fun.&#8221;</p><style>
