And the final score in the District 16 9-10 Baseball title game resembled a football score as well.Plains used a 10-run second inning and a six-run fourth to win the championship with an 18-8 victory over Mountain Top.The game ended after four innings due to the 10-run rule. Plains advances to the Section 5 tournament, playing D17 champion Abington American at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The entire Section 5 tournament will be at either Abington American or Green Ridge.The two programs have played for all three D16 baseball championships, with Mountain Top winning at the 10-11 and Major levels. So Wednesday&#8217;s victory allowed Plains to salvage something out of the rivalry and, perhaps, give a glimpse into the possible 2017 Major championship game.&#8220;It was a big win because the other two teams playing for districts was 10-11&#8217;s Plains vs. Mountain Top and 11-12 Plains vs. Mountain Top,&#8221; Plains manager Bill Cook said. &#8220;They lost and we wanted to represent them and help the other guys out by winning it for everybody.&#8221;The big difference in Plains&#8217; two big innings was Mountain Top&#8217;s inability to get that third out. Plains scored five of its 10 runs in the second inning with two outs. Five of the six runs in the fourth also scored that way.Of course, hitting played a big part as well in the 10-run second. Ryan Novakowski had a two-run double, just missing a grand slam as the ball hit the middle of the left field fence. Braeden Cook knocked in two with a single. Jeffrey Kozerski and Drew Menendez had RBI singles.In the fourth, Sean Monahan delivered a key two-out single that scored two runs. Evan Corcoran ended the game by scoring on an error on Jeremy Simonson&#8217;s groundout.Down 12-4 after Plains&#8217; first offensive eruption, Mountain Top battled right back into the game with a four-run third to move within 12-8. Mountain Top banged out five hits, with Aiden Verdekal&#8217;s two-run single the key one.Trevor Dean also had the second of his three hits in the Mountain Top third. He finished 3 for 3 with two RBI, both coming when he doubled in the first to score Ryan Covelens and Mason Butash. Covelens had doubled and Butash had singled.&#8220;Once Plains got some runs on us, I think our guys got nervous,&#8221; Mountain Top manager Rob Dean said. &#8220;They weren&#8217;t loose in the dugout. I even pulled them in and talked to them. Then they had a good inning. They went out and hit the ball. Once Plains came back, our guys kind of tightened up and weren&#8217;t loose at all.&#8221;Cook, Novakowski, Prudente and Menendez all finished 2 for 3 for Plains. Novakowski had three RBI.
