LCCC hosts musical production

<p>SWEET VALLEY &#8212; Tractors, trailers and trucks filled the lot of Casterline Diesel for the annual Garden Tractor Pull on Saturday afternoon.</p><p>Adults and children, some as young as 5 years old, participated in this year&#8217;s pull.</p><p>Events were separated between adults and children, each category with two to three weight subdivisions.</p><p>After the tractors and their drivers were weighed, they hooked the back of their vehicles to a farm sled. The goal was for the driver to pull the sled as far as possible down a 300-foot track. Once the driver stopped, the distance was measured and the sled was pulled back to the starting line for the next driver.</p><p>Five-year-old Jackson Probst of Jersey Shore and his grandfather, John Quiggle, both competed in the pull. Quiggle hit the track first, almost laying flat on top his tractor trying to keep the front wheels from hitting ground. After making it about three-quarters of the way down the track, he stopped.</p><p>Probst tried his hand at the track shortly after, but the muddy conditions made the attempt anything but easy. Regardless, Probst had fun navigating his machine, which resembled a blue race car.</p><p>The competition, sponsored by the Yellow Rose 4-H Club, has been going on for years, although this was the first time at Casterline Diesel.</p><p>Previously, the pull was held at the Sweet Valley Fire Company, said 4-H organizational leader Gail Verbyla.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re happy this many people came,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Between June and now we&#8217;ve had 19 inches of rain. It makes it difficult to drive and even steer to the track. You end up with a mud bog instead of a tractor pull.&#8221;</p><p>The track&#8217;s muddy conditions proved to be too difficult for some drivers, as they tried to navigate their back tires out of the slick terrain. Some just couldn&#8217;t make it off the starting line, their tires ultimately spinning into the ground. Those that did make it off the line were careful to avoid slippery spots, leaning their bodies from side to side to keep their front wheels from touching ground.</p><p>Brad Babb of Muncy managed to navigate his tractor down the 300-foot track. Babb said he&#8217;s been attending the tractor pulls for about 15 years.</p><p>&#8220;I just do it as a weekend hobby,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I can&#8217;t just sit around my house, it gives me something to do.&#8221;</p><p>Proceeds from the competition go to assist funding for various Yellow Rose 4-H Club activities.</p><style>
