Fire truck to school bus to balloons, Hanover Township safety fair for kids grows quickly

<p>PLAINS TWP. &#8212; The Plains Township Police Department&#8217;s National Night Out will end with a bang this year &#8212; actually, with a lot of bangs. And booms. And pops.</p><p>A fireworks display will top off the department&#8217;s annual event on Tuesday, which has been relocated to Plains Municipal Park to better accommodate the expected large turnout, said Officer Tim Minnick, event coordinator.</p><p>But the fireworks display is only one of many fun offerings designed to build community, promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer and better places to live.</p><p>There will be face painting by Trading Faces, a magician and a clown and many other activities for children.</p><p>&#8220;There&#8217;s going to be a lot of stuff for the kids to do,&#8221; Minnick said.</p><p>There will also be free hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, popcorn and Rita&#8217;s Italian Ice will be available to anyone in attendance, and DJ Mikey Mike will be providing musical entertainment..</p><p>&#8220;Thanks to the generosity of our area businesses, we&#8217;re able to provide everything free of charge,&#8221; Minnick added.</p><p>In addition to monetary donations, businesses have provided gift certificates for a raffle, he said.</p><p>And, of course, there will be presentations and handouts from the National Highway Safety Program, the state Office of Attorney General, AAA Motor Club, Pennsylvania State Police and the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department. Police and EMS vehicles will be on display and the Life Flight helicopter will be landing.</p><p>The Plains Township Fire Department also is a big part of the event. They assisted in putting the event together, with everything from setup to breakdown,&#8221; Minnick said. &#8220;It&#8217;s really become a community effort in putting it together.&#8221;</p><style>
