Troubled Exeter Borough Hose Company No. 1 regroups and reaches out to public for support

<p>DALLAS TWP. &#8212; In this saga, Grymie&#8217;s mom keeps calling Grymie&#8217;s dad an idiot. &#8220;It&#8217;s a run-on gag,&#8221; noted Jacob Thomas, portrayer of said idiot.</p><p>And what of Grymie? &#8220;I run away,&#8221; Sydney Tellis, a slip of a 12-year-old with eyes as bright as her smile, explains. &#8220;I&#8217;m trying to get to an island in the middle of nowhere.&#8221;</p><p>Okay, but why?</p><p>&#8220;Because my dad&#8217;s an idiot!&#8221; Sydney explained with the exasperation of stating the obvious, evoking laughs from fellow cast members gathered at the Misericordia University Performance Camp Wednesday.</p><p>Of course, she referred to her stage dad, Jacob, in what will be the debut of an original play titled &#8220;No Place I&#8217;d Rather Be,&#8221; scripted by Lonnie Barone, an executive leadership coach at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.</p><p>Thirty-five youngsters paid up to $550 each for a chance to be here, a camp that began July 22 and ends with performances of the play Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Lemmond Theater on Misericordia&#8217;s campus. The public is welcome.</p><p>While the script is original, the music book&#8217;s a mash-up. As Sydney and company offered endless accolades for their camp experience, other cast members on stage practiced &#8220;What is this feeling&#8221;: &#8220;Fervid as a flame, does it have a name, yes, yes, Loathing! Unadulterated Loathing.&#8221; (What did you expect, it comes from the play &#8220;Wicked,&#8221; after all.)</p><p>What other songs can an audience expect? &#8220;Pink Floyd,&#8221; Chloe McCarty chirped. She&#8217;s playing Sally, one half of a romantic subplot.</p><p>&#8220;Styx,&#8221; Jacob added.</p><p>Play director and Misericordia associate professor of speech language pathology Cari Tellis said Grymie and Sootie &#8212; played by effusive 13-year-old Oliver Lew of Dallas &#8212; &#8220;are the stars of the show, sort of.&#8221; The story centers on their search for the aforementioned nowhere island, and they &#8220;meet a lot of different characters and become really close,&#8221; said Oliver, who plays the leader of the &#8220;Dock kids,&#8221; a less wealthy lot sneered at by the &#8220;cruise kids&#8221; arriving by boat.</p><p>Asked what they liked most about the camp, all quickly agreed it was the camaraderie, the fact that everyone gets a moment in the limelight, and the ability to contribute to the production beyond their performances. &#8220;I love the connections, and acceptance,&#8221; Oliver said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve have made it a family,&#8221; Sydney added.</p><p>&#8220;To have the script writer with us is amazing,&#8221; Chloe said, at which Lew chimed in again.&#8220;There are times when we can change the script, make up back story for our characters.&#8221;</p><p>Which they demonstrated on the spot. Asked what his character&#8217;s name was, Jacob said he had none other than &#8220;Dad,&#8221; but Lew fixed that in a heartbeat. &#8220;You&#8217;re Ralph,&#8221; he said.</p><p>&#8220;What&#8217;s my name?&#8221; Michaeli asked. Sydney paused, staring upward with a long &#8220;ummmmmmm&#8221; before blurting, &#8220;Linda!&#8221;</p><p>Most of these youngsters want to be in film or theater in some way &#8212; hardly a surprise. But Michaeli has a different idea. &#8220;Music therapy,&#8221; she said. I like music and I like helping people, so it seems a perfect fit.&#8221;</p><p>And the big question that&#8217;s surely on everyone&#8217;s mind: Does Grymie get to that island? Sydney begins to answer but Oliver spins and cuts her short &#8212; dramatically, of course.</p><p>&#8220;No spoilers!&#8221; he insists. &#8220;If you want to find out, you have to come to the show!&#8221;</p><style>
