Pauly Friedman Family 5K Run raises funds for Help Line program

<p>DALLAS TWP. &#8212; Surveying the scene during a pre-race stretch with his daughters, Ken Levitt liked what he saw.</p><p>The start of the 7th annual Pauly Friedman 5k Family Walk/Run was about 10 minutes away and runners, walker and their pets passed in front of the Levitts loosening up in the shade of trees outside the Anderson Sports &amp; Health Center on the campus of Misericordia University.</p><p>Coming from Stroudsburg, they probably came the farthest to participate, the father said. Once a month he takes his daughters Allison, 10, and Holly, 8, to races and found this one online.</p><p>&#8220;This seemed like a very family race,&#8221; he said.</p><p>The girls have run in other races on their summer vacation and during the school year they&#8217;re part of the &#8220;Girls on the Run&#8221; program, Levitt said.</p><p>They were doing Sunday&#8217;s race just for the fun of it and fit right in.</p><p>&#8220;We try to make it a family event,&#8221; said Mike Zimmerman, executive director of the Family Service Association in Wilkes-Barre.</p><p><strong>Charitable cause</strong></p><p>The organization puts on the race to support its Help Line/211 program, which provides free information and referral services and handles crisis calls around-the-clock and year round in 17 counties.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the largest special event fundraiser that we have specifically for one of our programs, and that&#8217;s our Help Line/211,&#8221; Zimmerman said.</p><p>Friedman, who died in 2008, was a board member of FSA and helped start Help Line. The Friedman family is also a benefactor of Misericordia. In 2009, the university dedicated the Pauly House for single mothers and the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery .</p><p>Megan Kennedy, chairwoman of the event, said a committee begins preparing for the race six months in advance. About 200 people participated.</p><p>Since its inception, the race has been held at the school and that&#8217;s a big help, Zimmerman said</p><p>&#8220;One of the advantages of having it here is that we have an after race party where we have food, we have raffles and the baskets. And of course being here we&#8217;re able to do that at the Banks Center,&#8221; Zimmerman said.</p><p><strong>Friedmans turn out</strong></p><p>Friedman&#8217;s husband Sidney participated in the walk, and their son Rob thanked the everyone for their support.</p><p>The weather couldn&#8217;t have been better and Rob Friedman said his mother had a hand in making sure there were sunshine and blue skies.</p><p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t think she didn&#8217;t have anything to do with the day today,&#8221; he said.</p><p>The hilly course suited Joey Dowell, 31, of Berwick. He said he placed in his age group in previous races.</p><p>&#8220;This is one of the better courses,&#8221; Dowell said.</p><p>Jessica Rosencrans of Nanticoke brought her German shepherd puppy, Kloe. They joined Team FSA for the walk. The dog drew the attention of kids and adults and Tux, the mascot of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey team, who posed for pictures.</p><p>The pup let out a bark when it spied a larger canine being walking nearby on a leash. The big dog moved on and Kloe wagged her tail and looked around.</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;ll make some more friends,&#8221; Rosencrans said.</p><style>
