Wilkes-Barre recognized as certified sustainable municipality

<p>AVOCA &#8212; With introductory offers as low as $49, Allegiant announced Tuesday a new non-stop flight to Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg out of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.</p><p>At a news conference at the airport, Allegiant announced the new low-cost, nonstop flights that will begin Nov. 6, bringing more vacation deals for local travelers.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pleased to expand our operations in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and add another Florida destination for local travelers to visit with low-cost, non-stop flights,&#8221; said Jude Bricker, Allegiant Travel Company senior vice president of planning. &#8220;We look forward to taking local travelers to West Florida this fall, just in time for the holiday travel season.&#8221;</p><p>Mike Conner, the airport&#8217;s assistant director, said the flights will operate twice weekly &#8212; on Mondays and Fridays &#8212; and will fly non-stop between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. Conner said flight days, times and the lowest fares can be found only at Allegiant.com.</p><p>Tampa becomes Allegiant&#8217;s second destination from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, adding to existing service to Orlando that began in June 2012.</p><p>&#8220;This is great news that Allegiant will be expanding their flight schedule in northeastern Pennsylvania with non-stop service between AVP and Tampa,&#8221; said Richard G. Williams, AVP Airport&#8217;s board chairman. &#8220;The Tampa Bay area is one of our top destinations and we are excited that Allegiant will provide our area&#8217;s travelers with convenient, non-stop service to Tampa/St. Petersburg.&#8221;</p><p>Williams said the deal is supported for two years through a marketing grant. He said after the two years, the agreement will &#8220;hopefully be self-sufficient.&#8221;</p><p>The Tampa/St. Petersburg flight is the eighth non-stop flight offered at the airport. The other seven are: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Newark, Orlando-Sanford and Philadelphia.</p><p>&#8220;Adding Tampa to our non-stop destinations has been on our priority list for some time,&#8221; Conner said. &#8220;We&#8217;re glad to finally get this and I think Allegiant recognizes the opportunities here.&#8221;</p><style>
