<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The emergence of Bob Sypniewski and his proposal to save Wilkes-Barre Area&#8217;s three high school system dominated Monday&#8217;s School Board meeting, but the board did conduct monthly business.</p><p>The board:</p><p>&#8226; Renewed a &#8220;basic maintenance services agreement&#8221; with NRG Controls North, Inc. of Selingsgrove for the environmental control systems used in several district facilities, at a cost of $21,000 for one year.</p><p>&#8226; Approved change-orders in the contract for work by Panzitta Enterprises on the renovation of the Mackin building with a net cost of $20,200. The change order included repair of plaster and drywall for $68,794, an elimination of a plan for rock excavation that saves $72,000, elimination of plans to install science lab storage room cabinets saving another $1,036, a new overhead door adding $3,291, lowering the height of a fence for a savings of $1,501, addition of three access doors at a cost of $700 and installation of new facing and insulation at a cost of $21,953.</p><p>&#8226; Approved change-orders requested by G.R. Noto Electrical Construction at the Mackin project for a total increase of $4,004.</p><p>&#8226; Awarded a contract to Mark J. Sobeck Roof Consulting Inc. of Wilkes-Barre to design re-roofing at GAR High School over the shop area and and printing department at a cost of $6,975.</p><p>&#8226; Approved a contract with A&amp;E Group, Inc. of Wilkes-Barre for architectural design of work at the GAR shop/print area project for $8,975.</p><p>&#8226; Approved a contract with Rosen Real Estate, Inc., of Wilkes-Barre to conduct appraisals of three district properties at a cost not to exceed $5,000.</p><p>&#8226; Approved no-bid purchases for the Mackin School through the state&#8217;s COSTARS system &#8212; $221,606 for furniture from Stone Office, Inc. of Scranton, and $85,486 for kitchen equipment from Rice&#8217;s Food Equipment and consulting , Inc. of Dallas.</p><p>&#8226; Approved the purchase of &#8220;cafeteria smallware&#8221; for each school at a total of $32,457. One item was cited with derision by an audience member during the public comment section, an electric can opener with the lower of two bids at $605. The second bid was $716.</p><p>&#8226; Approved a lease of property in Plains Township controlled by the U.S. Army Reserve for storage space at $2,500 a month. The district will move items stored at the old Wilkes-Barre Township high school building, where the roof collapsed months ago.</p><p>The board voted to give Superintendent Bernard Prevuznak a 3 percent raise as per his contract because he had a performance evaluation of &#8220;distinguished&#8221; as determined by the board, increasing his annual pay by about $4,300.</p><p>The board also approved status changes in the administrative staff that Prevuznak said would save &#8220;well over $1 million&#8221; by increasing responsibilities of current administrators while reducing staff by attrition.</p><p>And the board made the following appointments: Veronica Tobin and Tammy Latinski as elementary long-term substitutes; Jenny Wilczak as speech language pathologist long-term substitute; Jessica Handler as Title I reading long-term substitute; Michelle Yelland as 10-month secretary; Samantha Yanora as 20-hour per week copy room aide; Donna Hooker and Jane Deschak as 32.5-hour-per-week para professionals; Walter Allabaugh and Brian Miller as substitute security greeter; and Diane Johnson as substitute crossing guard.</p><style>
