Pennsylvania falls out of 9-10 regional softball tournament

MOOSIC &#8212; Dating back to the 2014 season, the RailRiders haven&#8217;t had many problems against rival Pawtucket.Scranton/WilkesBarre entered Wednesday night&#8217;s game at PNC Field on a six-game winning streak against the PawSox and winners of 16 of the last 19 games in the series going back to last season.On Wednesday night, the RailRiders continued their dominance over Pawtucket with a 4-3 win in 12 innings.In the last frame, Greg Bird led off with a single. Rico Noel, who ran for Bird, stole second and third before Gary Sanchez lined out and Aaron Judge won it with a deep single to center.The fourth straight win for the RailRiders wouldn&#8217;t have been possible without the contributions once again by the red-hot Ben Gamel.Gamel, who has been a big reason for the team&#8217;s performance over the last two and half weeks, once again propelled the team on Wednesday night.Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the RailRiders started to chip away as team catalyst Gamel got things started, which has been the norm of late.Gamel began the sixth with a line single to center to extend his hitting streak to 11 in a row and 16 out of his last 17 games, then scored on a double by Rob Refsnyder. After Refsnyder was moved to third on a groundout, he scored on a grounder by Gary Sanchez to pull the team within a run at 3-2.Gamel came through again in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out solo shot to right tying the game 3-3. It was his ninth homer of the season after beginning the season with 1o career longballs in five minor league seasons.Eric Ruth got the start on Tuesday being promoted from Double-A Trenton early in the day as the RailRiders&#8217; probable starter Chris Capuano was summoned to New York following the Yankees&#8217; marathon loss to the Indians on Tuesday night.The right-handed Ruth got off to a rough start as the first two Pawtucket hitters of the game scored when Deven Marrero singled and Quintin Berry hit his second homer in as many games for a 2-0 lead.He settled down after that and didn&#8217;t allow another run until his last inning, the top of the sixth when Allen Craig started with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly giving the PawSox a 3-0 lead.In his outing, Ruth only had one strikeout, which came in his last inning, but he kept hitters off-balance inducing 11 groundball outs and getting two other outs that didn&#8217;t leave the infield.Despite losing a pair of pitchers to New York on Wednesday, the SWB bullpen had another quality effort tossing six scoreless frames and just one hit.
