Judge tosses murder conviction of man in prison for 34 years

<p>SWEET VALLEY &#8212;Her first postcard came from Louisiana in February, the last one from Idaho in August.</p><p>In between, 8-year-old Juliet Price kept an eye on the mailbox at her rural home, eager to see who would send a postcard to help her meet her 50-state goal.</p><p>&#8220;This was a history and geography project,&#8221; said Juliet&#8217;s mom, Becky, who home-schools her daughter. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t want her to think learning is boring.&#8221;</p><p>With pictures of New York&#8217;s Brooklyn Bridge, Alaska&#8217;s Northern Lights and Utah&#8217;s state bird &#8212; it&#8217;s a sea gull, by the way &#8212; arriving from across the country, Juliet definitely wasn&#8217;t bored.</p><p>She enjoyed taping the cards to a wall near a map of the United States and coloring in each state as the appropriate postcard arrived.</p><p>&#8220;I did it!&#8221; she wrote in crayon when the Idaho card arrived.</p><p>Thanks to the postcards, sent by people her family knows personally as well as her mom&#8217;s Facebook friends and friends of friends, Juliet has learned about state capitals, regional industries and national parks.</p><p>Among the more humorous messages, the Rhode Island postcard gleefully announces the tiny, seaside state is &#8220;3 percent bigger at low tide&#8221; and the Iowa card displays cute pigs and declares the state to be &#8220;hog heaven.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I thought we lived in &#8216;hog heaven,&#8221; Becky said, explaining the family raises pigs as well as chickens.</p><p>Many of the postcards included written notes, such as Ruthann Fiegelman&#8217;s message that the Badlands of South Dakota have &#8220;neat trails for hiking,&#8221; but you should always take plenty of water. A correspondent whose card was postmarked Oklahoma City sent a picture of a tornado and a message about being under a severe storm watch and an aunt and uncle from Georgia said they hoped Pennsylvania weather was getting nice and warm like theirs.</p><p>Beginner-writer scrawl on a Little Pony postcard from San Francisco introduced the sender as &#8220;Lexie,&#8221; 7 years old.</p><p>Becky said the family is grateful to the many people who sent 135 postcards in all, especially because she believes postcards are getting more difficult to find in many locations.</p><p>The project was fun, said Juliet, the youngest and only girl in the family, among Terry and Becky Price&#8217;s five children. Her next goal is a simpler one, and involves baking a cake for a contest at Sweet Valley Church of Christ. Her from-scratch cake won two years ago, and last year her 13-year-old brother, Todd, won.</p><p>She&#8217;s hoping it&#8217;s her turn to take back the title.</p><style>
