US student who helped stop France terror attack arrives home

<p>HANOVER TWP. &#8212; Michael Coleman recalled Tuesday he stopped at the PSC service station on Sans Souci Parkway after seeing a crime scene nearby on Main Road early Saturday morning.</p><p>Coleman said he heard a little boy had been struck by a vehicle.</p><p>In a panic, Coleman rushed to his residence on Main Road to find his 13-year-old son sleeping.</p><p>Hours later, Coleman said, his wife, Barbara, called him with devastating news that their eldest son, Joseph Coleman, 21, was killed in a hit-and-run crash.</p><p>Township police said Joseph Coleman was struck by a vehicle at about 5:44 a.m. Saturday. The driver of the vehicle failed to stay at the scene and drove away, headed north on Main Road, police said.</p><p>An autopsy Monday by forensic pathologist Dr. Gary Ross revealed Joseph Coleman died from multiple traumatic injuries due to being struck by a motor vehicle.</p><p>Luzerne County Coroner William Lisman ruled the death a homicide.</p><p>&#8220;I left the house at 6:15 a.m. and started driving down there and saw it all taped off,&#8221; Michael Coleman said. &#8220;I got my work truck and I always get gas at the PSC station. I heard a little boy got struck and I rushed home and ran upstairs to make sure our 13-year-old son was okay.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know it was my son at the time,&#8221; said Coleman, explaining that police went to his home hours later and notified his wife about their eldest son&#8217;s death.</p><p>As the Coleman family grieves, Michael is trying to make sense of what happened.</p><p>Main Road travels off Sans Souci Parkway and proceeds through the residential areas of Buttonwood and Hanover Green before it turns into Liberty Street and descends back onto Sans Souci. The only businesses in the area are adjacent to Sans Souci where Main Road begins.</p><p>When Joseph Coleman was struck, the only businesses open were the service station and a self-serve car wash.</p><p>&#8220;Nobody is going to come off Sans Souci and drive on Main Road and go back onto Sans Souci,&#8221; Coleman said. &#8220;If you&#8217;re leaving from anywhere in Hanover Green or Buttonwood, it&#8217;s like a patch up here, you&#8217;re driving to Sans Souci.&#8221;</p><p>Police Chief Al Walker could not be reached for comment on Monday and Tuesday.</p><p>But Hanover Township police said Saturday that Joseph Coleman was believed to have been walking in the middle of Main Road.</p><p>Michael Coleman also said a patron at PSC getting a cup of coffee at about 5:30 a.m. saw a man walking in the middle of Main Road waving his arms.</p><p>But he believes his son left a friend&#8217;s house on Cook Street in Ashley and rode a purple-colored Huffy mountain bicycle that morning.</p><p>However, to the father&#8217;s knowledge, there was no bicycle found in the immediate area where his son was killed.</p><p>He further claimed Tuesday that police never questioned anyone at the Cook Street residence to confirm whether his son left on a bicycle and what time he left.</p><p>&#8220;There are no skid marks. That tells me the person didn&#8217;t try to stop,&#8221; Michael Coleman said. &#8220;What I want to say to the driver is, &#8216;You should had stopped to see if he was alright. If you were legally drunk or not, you should have stopped.&#8217;&#8221;</p><style>
