WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Once Holy Redeemer decided it was easier to play one opponent Saturday afternoon, things went much smoother in the second half.The Royals dominated Holy Cross in the final two quarters &#8212; in big part because they cut down their mistakes &#8212; for a 21-0 victory in a non-conference game at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.&#8220;That&#8217;s what I told the team,&#8221; Redeemer coach Scott Dennis said. &#8220;That first half we shot ourselves in the foot. I thought we were driving the ball well, then anytime we got inside the 30 we ended up with a penalty here, a penalty there. We had a great kick return and get a penalty and get pushed back.&#8220;Those are the things you need to clean up. We talked about those things at halftime, the penalties and just playing error-free football.&#8221;The Royals listened, scoring on their first three possessions of the second half. Their only penalty and turnover came late in the game with some reserves on the field.Running back Tom Engle played a big part. The junior rushed for a career-high 102 yards, including runs of 21 and 20 yards on Redeemer&#8217;s first drive of the third quarter. He capped the 70-yard drive with a 9-yard TD run.&#8220;We were still confident,&#8221; Engle said of the halftime mood. &#8220;We got down on ourselves at first, but then we knew we had to pick it up and we did.&#8221;Redeemer scored on its second possession of the third quarter, with running back Eric Jefferies scoring on a 2-yard dive. Receiver Alex Wampole provided the biggest play of the 68-yard drive, outjumping a defender for a 21-yard reception on a fourth-and-18 play.The next time Redeemer touched the ball, it went up 21-0. Running back Justin Januszo sifted through the first wave of defenders and then dashed 64 yards for a touchdown with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter.Redeemer finished with 262 yards rushing, an encouraging sign for a program that&#8217;s struggled running the ball since its inception in 2007. Engle needed 21 carries to break the 100-yard barrier. Jefferies finished with 62 more on 15 rushes. Januszko touched the ball twice for 67 yards.&#8220;We have a couple running backs we like,&#8221; Dennis said. &#8220;They have good speed and they&#8217;ve had a year in the weightroom, so they&#8217;re stronger than they were last year.&#8221;As for Holy Cross, the game started well as running back Josh Mies made some strong runs on the Crusaders&#8217; first possession. But after gaining 20 yards on his first three rushes, Mies was held to 33 for the game.Holy Cross&#8217; deepest penetration all game was to the Redeemer 44-yard line. That came to start the game.&#8220;I don&#8217;t know if the heat got to us,&#8221; Holy Cross coach Josh Watters said, &#8220;but Redeemer made some good adjustments on defense and was able to contain us.
