WVC field hockey celebrates 40th season with scholarship funding

<p>Need some help tracing your ancestors through their church records?</p><p>Stop by the research library of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Genealogical Society at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. Doug Nicol will speak on researching church records in the society&#8217;s holdings. It&#8217;s part of the group&#8217;s program of continuing education for genealogists.</p><p>&#8220;Doug will present a slide series on how to use the vast NEPGS digital catalog to help advance your genealogical research,&#8221; the group says in a release. &#8220;He will go over what to look for in these records and some tidbits on reading Latin and other languages in which these records are recorded.&#8221;</p><p>The research library is in the caretaker building on the grounds of the Hanover Green Cemetery, Main Road, Hanover Township.</p><p>The program is free and open to the public, but anyone who wants to attend is asked to reserve a spot. Call 570 829-1765.</p><p>The presentation will begin right after a brief nominating meeting for the group&#8217;s officers and board of directors. Any member in good standing is eligible to run for a seat. Call the above number if interested.</p><p>In a related matter, the society has extended its program of instruction in using DNA to establish family relationship. Entitled the DNA Interest Group, the program will be held at the research library this Wednesday as well as Oct. 7 and 14 and Nov. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.</p><p>DNA analysis has become an important tool for determining family relationships down through the generations as well as establishing ethnic background.</p><p>These sessions are free for members, while a nominal fee is charged to non-members attending.</p><p>County Records Update: The Luzerne County Council recently authorized $1.45 million in capital project funds for a new records storage facility, Times Leader reported last week. Records have been stored for several years in a former produce warehouse in downtown Wilkes-Barre, a site that has been criticized as inadequate to protect the old documents that are vital to genealogists and non-genealogists alike.</p><p>The county is looking at buying and rehabbing a Hanover Township site.</p><p>Nanticoke Historical Society: Through quick action, the Nanticoke Historical Society has obtained what it calls &#8220;a treasure trove of memorabilia&#8221; pertaining to former Gov. John S. Fine, a native of Newport Township who grew up in Nanticoke, the group has announced.</p><p>In a project headed by Vice President Chet Zaremba, the group acted after learning that Fine&#8217;s grandson, John S. Fine III, was planning to move from Pennsylvania and was willing to donate many artifacts. Fine (1893-1978) was a Luzerne County judge and judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court. He served as governor from 1951 to 1955.</p><p>The society will establish a special room for the artifacts in the Samantha Mill House, near the Nanticoke Library. &#8220;The John S. Fine Reading Room will have its official unveiling after books, photos, certificates and other memorabilia are placed,&#8221; the society says in a release.</p><p>News Notes: Jane Varcoe will speak on &#8220;The Life and Times of Lake Ladore&#8221; at the next meeting of the Genealogical Research Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the research library, 1100 Main St., Peckville.
