Pipeline construction: Why here? Why now?

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Area residents made their way to Kirby Park on Monday to celebrate Labor Day and mark the end of summer at the NEPA Labor Day Celebration and Festival.</p><p>Clear skies and warm temperatures greeted bands, vendors and festivalgoers.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve really enjoyed the music,&#8221; said Lindsey Lapp. &#8220;The band is awesome.&#8221;</p><p>The Danville woman said the trip was well worth it as she watched her daughter, 6-year-old Seyla, smiling and laughing in the bounce house.</p><p>The event, organized by the NEPA Labor Festival, was meant to honor the labor movement and the contributions of American workers while providing an atmosphere of fun, according to organizer Patty Krushnowski.</p><p>Krushnowski said the event was geared toward families, offering something for all ages.</p><p>&#8220;For example, we offer a coloring contest and other kid-friendly activities,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We want the kids to enjoy themselves.&#8221;</p><p>Krushnowski said both the holiday and the event were geared toward appreciating the past while looking to the future.</p><p>&#8220;When we think back at the beginning of unions, we think about coal miners,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Unions enable people to build good lives and enrich communities.&#8221;</p><p>Two unions were especially honored at the event, the United Mine Workers and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union for their past contributions to the local community.</p><p>In its third year, the annual effort benefits the Living Care Unit at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.</p><p>Bands played throughout the day, providing a musical backdrop that included everything from pop to country to classic rock.</p><p>Many of those gathered dropped a blanket on the ground and spent time with family as children played in the grass nearby.</p><p>As Wilkes-Barre resident Kennard Johnston made his way through the park, he said he simply enjoyed meeting new people in a positive atmosphere.</p><p>Those who came hungry were not disappointed. More than a dozen food vendors offered everything from ice cream to cup cakes to specialty items.</p><p>PananaMan offered a deep fried peanut butter and banana sandwich. The treat had many asking owner Phillip Delzeit, &#8220;Did you invent this?&#8221;</p><p>Delzeit said community events like Monday&#8217;s have provided opportunity to familiarize area residents with his unique culinary item.</p><p>Mike Sabia and The Cupcake Camper offered an assortment of cup cake favorites from trendy to traditional. Peanut butter cup was the overall favorite, he said.</p><p>Sabia of Dunmore said although business was somewhat slow at times, he thoroughly enjoyed the getting to know Wyoming Valley residents.</p><p>For those who wanted to try something new Inner Crazy Body Art was on hand, providing henna tattoos. Among the favorite tattoos was a hand design filled with flowers and a butterfly, topped with a bit of glitter that sparkled in the sunshine.</p><style>
