State Supreme Court suspends Kingston-based attorney

<p>NANTICOKE &#8212; Phyllis Carlo sat off to the side and watched the ceremony.</p><p>Her son, Michael Scott Carlo, was one of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center&#8217;s Twin Towers 14 years ago. He was with the Fire Department of New York&#8217;s Engine #230.</p><p>The ceremony Phyllis watched was held Friday morning at Luzerne County Community College&#8217;s Walk of Honor near the college&#8217;s Public Safety Training Institute to commemorate the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.</p><p>The Walk of Honor is a memorial area that features bricks, plaques and benches with engraved dedications to honor the memories of local first responders.</p><p>Michael Scott Carlo, one of those braver than brave souls who ran into the burning buildings in New York City, was 34 years old.</p><p>Phyllis, of the Wanamie section of Newport Township, donated $20,000 to LCCC to build the Walk of Honor park that honors her son and others. Friday&#8217;s ceremony meant a lot to many, but most of all to Phyllis and the memory of her son.</p><p>Her other son, Robert, also worked for the FDNY on that fateful day.</p><p>&#8220;He survived,&#8221; Phyllis said of Robert.</p><p>She attends the ceremony every year on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks &#8212; the anniversary of her son&#8217;s death.</p><p>&#8220;This gives me peace of mind,&#8221; she said. &#8220;These ceremonies must be held so we never forget 9/11 and all the people who died that day.&#8221;</p><p><strong>Husband honored</strong></p><p>Barbara Glova was there to honor her late husband, Ray, a firefighter with the Elm Hill Fire Co. #3 in Plymouth Borough for 49 years. Glova said her family has always been about public safety. She said her son was a firefighter in Plymouth and her grandson worked as a part-time police officer. A nephew works for the FBI in Florida.</p><p>On this day, as the country and most of the world remembered the fallen of Sept. 11, 2001, all first responders everywhere &#8212; those paid and those who volunteer &#8212; also are remembered, honored and thanked.</p><p>It takes a special person to run willingly into a burning building to try to save others. It takes courage, compassion and guts.</p><p>That&#8217;s what we honor on Sept. 11 and what we should honor every day. Without these people, our world would not be safe at all &#8212; not from terrorist attacks and not from common criminals.</p><p>First responders are not unlike veterans who fought to preserve our freedom.</p><p>Soldiers who went into battle, sometimes knowing they might not return. Yet they went and they battled and they sacrificed. The first responders of 9/11 and those in your hometown go forward, setting personal safety aside, to protect us.</p><p><strong>Flag carrying</strong></p><p>At Misericordia University, teams of students carried an American flag around campus all day. It&#8217;s a national campaign called Constant Flag Carry that keeps the flag waving all day.</p><p>Most of the students were just starting on their education path 14 years ago and their recollections of the terrorist attacks are vague. But they all seized the opportunity Friday to participate, to remember, to honor.</p><p>&#8220;As the years go by, sometimes we tend to forget what happened,&#8221; said Jim Tunison, a member of the Misericordia baseball team. &#8220;So this is good to take the time to remember the sacrifices made by so many.&#8221;</p><p>Ashley Peachey, 26, and Asia Thompson, 22, are in Misericordia&#8217;s Women With Children Program. Peachey grew up in a military family and is a member of the U.S. Army National Guard. She served active duty for five years and was deployed to Iraq.</p><p>&#8220;Carrying the flag today helps contribute to the overall effort to feel proud as a nation,&#8221; Peachey said. &#8220;America was changed that day and now we are fighting a different kind of war.&#8221;</p><p>Thompson said carrying the flag made her feel proud to be an American.</p><p>&#8220;We have to have these events to assure we never forget that devastating event,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Sometimes it&#8217;s easy to forget. But we have to remember and we have to teach each generation what we have gone through as a nation and why we must never forget.&#8221;</p><p><strong>&#8216;Burning inferno&#8217;</strong></p><p>State Sen. John Yudichak, D-Plymouth Township, said heroes like Michael Carlo &#8212; &#8220;a valiant, courageous NYC firefighter who was raised just over the hill in Newport Township&#8221; &#8212; must never leave our hearts or our memories.</p><p>&#8220;Michael Carlo stood at the foot of the burning inferno that was the World Trade Center and displayed the qualities we have come to expect from our first responders,&#8221; Yudichak said. &#8220;He was fearless and selfless and he charged into the face of incredible horrors to protect the lives of others with little or no regard for his own life.&#8221;</p><p>Yudichak said Phyllis Carlo channeled her emotions for the greater good.</p><p>&#8220;She took the hate of the terrorist and conquered it with a mother&#8217;s love that was more powerful than any act of terrorism,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Yudichak said Phyllis Carlo defeated the terrorists who attacked our nation and her son. He said ceremonies like the one Friday at LCCC and places like the Walk of Honor show the world that love will always conquer hate.</p><p>Yudichak said it best: &#8220;I stand here today to proclaim to the world that as long as love beats in the hearts of mothers like Phyllis Carlo, there is no evil, there is no enemy, foreign or domestic, that can extinguish the great flame of democracy and freedom that is the United States of America.&#8221;</p><p>And so we carry on.</p><style>
