Defensive dominance carries Berwick

TUNKHANNOCK &#8212; After losing their season openers, Tunkhannock and Western Wayne both brought a highly-motivated tone into Friday night&#8217;s matchup.Western Wayne, though, managed to come out with a 21-20 over the Tigers.The Wildcats were coming off a 34-6 loss to North Pocono. And after an impressive first half last week and eventual loss 43-12 in the season opener to Athens, Tunkhannock gained some momentum towards &#8220;restoring the roar.&#8221;What started as a lopsided first half, Tunkhannock fought back, eventually grinding out 20 points in the second half. By halftime, senior running back Ryan Cywinski completed the one-two punch by toting the ball seven times 81 yards while his brother Logan tallied 83 more. With 1:41 left in the third quarter he put the Tigers on the board with a 10-yard run, making it 21-6.Logan Cywinski began the season on a strong note in Week 1 by ranking first in carries (22) and second in rushing yards (142) in WVC Division 3A. He reinforced and improved upon that performance by rushing for 201 yards on 20 carries. Ryan Cywinski rambled for 100 yards on 11 carries.Tunkhannock started the game with an onside kick and less than two minutes into the game Western Wayne capitalized to make it 7-0 on a 2-yard run by quarterback Scott Walck. The run was set up on a 36-yard pass to Dylan Walck.With 2:58 left in the third, Ryan Cywinski sprinted 51 yards straight up the middle of the field to pull the score to within one, 21-20. Western Wayne held on to the score as the two-point conversion passed failed.Three plays later, the Tigers&#8217; Mike Taylor intercepted Western Wayne to give them the ball on their own 48 yard line. A personal foul penalty marched the Tigers back 15 yards and the possession stalled.&#8220;Were getting better and the kids didn&#8217;t quit&#8221;, said Tunkhannock coach Jan Cechak. &#8220;I told them their starting to become good football players.
