Steamtown National Historic Site announces expanded 2014 summer excursion schedule

First Posted: 3/13/2014 Nebraska Theatre Caravan will bring the world&#8217;s longest-running musical, &#8220;The Fantasticks,&#8221; to Community Concerts Saturday, March 29, at 7 p.m. at the Theater at Lackawanna College.
&#8220;The Fantasticks&#8221; is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. It is a tale of young lovers who become disillusioned, only to discover a more mature, meaningful love. Nebraska Theatre Caravan will make its stop in Scranton as part of its 65-city national tour.
Through the creative genius of director Carl Beck, costume designer Georgiann Regan, and scenic designer Jim Othuse comes a fresh steampunk adaptation of this classical musical, which promises to provide an unparalleled experience for those revisiting this show or seeing it for the first time. Audience members may even find themselves humming along to such memorable songs as &#8220;Try to Remember&#8221; and &#8220;Soon It&#8217;s Gonna Rain.&#8221;
&#8220;The Fantasticks,&#8221; written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, opened off-Broadway May 3, 1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York City&#8217;s Greenwich Village with stage, film, and television actor Jerry Orbach in the leading role. The production went on to play a record-breaking 17,162 performances before closing January 13, 2002, making it the world&#8217;s longest-running musical and the longest continuously-running production of any kind in the United States. &#8220;The Fantasticks&#8221; is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
