First Posted: 7/24/2014 LEHMAN TWP &#8212; Two Lake-Lehman high school seniors attended a career exploration camp, the school board announced at Monday night&#8217;s meeting.
Elana Herceg and Hannah Cross attended the Chemistry-Biochemistry Career Exploration Camp in late June and early July at Misericordia University. The university annually hosts up to six Lake-Lehman juniors or seniors who wish to participate in one of the career exploration programs.
The programs are available through the Lake-Lehman Foundation in partnership with Misericordia. There is no cost to students wishing to attend.
The Foundation President Bonnie Turchin said that the camp that Herceg and Cross chose gave the students an insight into the fields of &#8220;forensic science, alternative energy programs, the pharmaceutical industry and other similar careers.&#8221;
Other camps that have been offered include a business camp, communications and media camp and literature camp.
Johnna Evans, a past president and current member of the foundation, said that many past Lehman graduates, who are now Misercordia students, are volunteering with the camp.
&#8220;It is their way of giving back to their school&#8221; said Evans.
In other matters, the board authorized the purchase and installation of concession stand equipment from Rice&#8217;s Food Equipment and Consulting of Dallas at a total cost of $25,460.30.
The board also awarded the bid for the Lake-Noxen Elementary School paving/resurfacing project to Robert C. Young Inc., of Mifflinville, at a cost of $52,400.00. All members were in favor of the motion, with the exception of board President Mark Kornowski, who voted against it, and Richard Bombick and Kevin Carey who were absent for the meeting.
The following changes to the 2014-2015 school calendar were approved: Aug. 29, 2014; Dec. 23, 2014; and April 2, 2015 are now days of early dismissal. The days were originally scheduled as full days.
Superintendent James McGovern said that the adjustments were made because &#8220;all of the days precede vacations&#8221; when the school will be closed for a period of time.
The board will meet next at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18.
