First Posted: 4/4/2014 Pennsylvania&#8217;s transportation plan, Act 89, is helping clear the way for the start of 22 projects in PennDOT&#8217;s Northeast region, District Executive George Roberts said.
Roberts hosted a briefing to outline details of regional projects made possible by Act 89, signed into law in November.
Governor Tom Corbett announced that statewide, more than $2.1 billion in highway and bridge projects will begin in 2014, $600 million more than what would have been available without Act 89. More than 250 of roughly 900 projects are beginning this year due to Act 89.
Roberts noted that with Act 89, 22 projects will start this year, including:
* Resurfacing more than 145 miles of non-interstate roadway throughout in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties for $41million.
* Safety improvements to Route 6 in Texas Township, Wayne County, including new turning lanes, upgrading intersections and repaving for $2.6 million;
* Resurfacing Interstate 84 between Exit 2 (Elmhurst) and Exit 8 (Mt. Cobb/Hamlin) for $7.3 million; and
* Planning for construction of a maintenance facility including compressed natural gas for the County of Lackawanna Transportation investment across all modes.
Roberts said the district will also begin 64 additional projects this year.
* SR 6011 Harrison Avenue bridge for $16 million;
*Improvement on Route 6 and 11 between Factoryville and Clarks Summit including rehabilitating and replacing seven structures, upgrading intersections and pavement for $28 million;
* Dunmore Signal Corridor
* River Street Corridor in Wilkes-Barre
* 32 bridge replacements.
By its fifth year, Act 89 will generate an additional $2.3 billion to $2.4 billion a year in added statewide transportation investment across all modes.
