First Posted: 7/18/2014 Cesar Leon captured both the singles and doubles titles in the first Lackawanna County Open Tennis Tournament at the Scranton Tennis Club.
Leon made it through the singles draw without losing a game as he blanked Robby Azzarelli, a local high school standout, 6-0, 6-0 in the final. In the doubles final he paired with club pro Joe McNulty to defeat John Weiss and Curtis Althouse 7-5, 6-1.
Amanda Holyk, took the Women&#8217;s A Singles title with a win over Scranton Prep&#8217;s Emily Jonsson, 2-6, 6-4, (11-9). The final point featured a long rally of over 30 shots, which ended when Holyk hit a shot that just dropped over the net.
Jonsson got a measure of revenge as she paired with Prep teammate Maansi Malhotra to take the Women&#8217;s A Doubles title over Holyk and Kathleen McKenna 6-3, 6-3.
Lauren Carroll took the Women&#8217;s B Singles title with victories over Carolyn Hickman and Brittany Creegan in the round-robin style event. In Sunday&#8217;s match Carroll bested Creegan 7-6(3), 6-1. Hickman took second place with a victory over Creegan on Saturday.
In the Men&#8217;s B Singles, Richard Ling knocked off his third Scranton High School varsity player in a row, as he defeated Ben Strickland 6-3, 6-2 for the title.
In the Men&#8217;s A Doubles semifinals, Leon and McNulty ousted Meade Palmer and Gene DeLucy 6-0, 6-1, while Weiss and Althouse edged Doug Klamp and Rob Farrell 7-6(7), 6-3.
Jonsson and Malhotra reached the Women&#8217;s A Doubles final by defeating Angie Kluss and Ellen Boyer 6-3, 6-3.
Burt Reese and John Weiss were co-directors for the tournament, assisted by Joe McNulty and Kathleen McKenna. The inaugural event attracted 31 singles players and 15 doubles teams.
