First Posted: 5/21/2014 WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Alicia Johnson, editor of The Abington Journal, has been named sports editor of The Times Leader Media Group.
Johnson replaces John Medeiros, who had been sports editor since 2011.
&#8220;I&#8217;m incredibly excited and appreciative of this opportunity,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Sports has been a major part of my life, and I look forward to bringing that excitement to the sports department.&#8221;
Prior to editing the Journal, Johnson was managing editor of 33 Universal in New York City, where she led a digital-only news team. She also was a sports reporter and editor at The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y., where she &#8212; in addition to covering games &#8212; maintained two blogs and shot and edited video. Before that, she was a sports reporter at The Sentinel in Carlisle.
&#8220;Alicia is an energetic journalist with significant experience in sports and digital journalism,&#8221; said George Spohr, executive editor of The Times Leader Media Group, which includes The Times Leader and The Abington Journal. &#8220;She&#8217;s the best person to lead our award-winning sports team.&#8221;
Johnson will remain editor of the Journal during a brief transition period.
