First Posted: 2/27/2014 Seventh-grade students at Abington Heights Middle School have been presented with the opportunity to experiment with their learning.
Principal Micheal Elia has implemented cross-curricular work between arts and classroom activities.
Art teacher Dena Maciak recently worked on a project with students in a social studies class where they used abstract art to create a photo of the first five presidents.
&#8220;It lets kids who aren&#8217;t necessarily good in academics, flourish in the arts and we can combine the knowledge that they know in both,&#8221; Maciak said. &#8220;The students like the fact that they can do something totally different, but it still pertains to what they are doing in the classroom.&#8221;
According to Maciak, the five presidents were cut into sections so that each student got their own piece.
&#8220;We talked about abstract art and how they could make each piece their own,&#8221; she said, &#8220;but it didn&#8217;t have to look like anything in particular. Then, I put them back together and they get to see the five presidents.&#8221;
Maciak also worked with students in an English class to create an illustration for a poem.
&#8220;It helps them think across the board,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It deepens the students learning, engages the students in learning and reinforces what they have already learned.&#8221;
