First Posted: 10/23/2014 Just two years ago, Tyler McGarry would never have thought his golf game would be where it is today. And after claiming the District 2 title a few weeks back, the accolades just keep coming.
McGarry, a Pittston Area senior, was named the Wyoming Valley Conference Class AAA Most Valuable Player for the 2014 golf season.
McGarry&#8217;s improvement from last season to this season is impressive. He fired an 85 in last season&#8217;s district tournament at Elmhurst. But a dedicated offseason and districts being played at his home course Fox Hill gave him the opportunity to do something special. He shot a 74 to take home gold.
At the Eastern Regional, McGarry ran into tough luck. He finished just two strokes off the state-qualifying pace. He carded an 80 at Golden Oaks Country Club in Fleetwood with the qualifying number being 78. McGarry was very consistent on the day though shooting 40 on the front 9 and 40 on the back. He hurt himself most with a triple bogey on No. 3 and a double bogey on the No. 14 hole.
McGarry also won the pre-district tournament at Fox Hill, shooting a 77.
Wyoming Area&#8217;s Maddy Wharton had the best female season in the Wyoming Valley Conference. The Warriors junior was named to the WVC 3A first team.
Wharton also won the District 2 title at Fox Hill a few weeks back. The Eastern Regional was also difficult to swallow for Wharton. She carded a 90 on the course, which was tied for the seventh-lowest score in the event. But only seven females were to move on to the PIAA Championships to be held Oct. 22 at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
She moved into a playoff with Emily Conrad from District 4&#8217;s Lewisburg, but came out just short. Wharton shot a 42 on the front nine and carded 48 on the back nine holes.
Pittston Area&#8217;s Dave Zydko and Allie Craig were named honorable mention. Anthony Shaver from Wyoming Area was also an honorable mention.
The 3A first team was: McGarry; Jason Dotzel, Crestwood; Shane Angle, Crestwood; Ryan Keyes, Coughlin; Brendon Baloh, Dallas; Brett Soltysink, Tunkhannock; Wharton; Tyler Yankosky, Valley West.
