First Posted: 10/22/2013 The Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area announces a ribbon cutting and grand opening of the newest stretch of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail (LRHT) between Morse Avenue in Simpson and the D&H Rail-Trail in the Borough of Vandling. The restoration of the three old railroad bridges has closed the gap between the D&H northern section and the southern sections of the LRHT. This connection was significant because it ties the entire 70 mile trail system together.
The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 1, at 11:30 a.m. at the northernmost bridge that is located two miles south of the Forest City trailhead. Parking will be available at the Forest City trailhead, located off PA 247 at Industrial Park Road. PROPST transportation will be transporting shuttle guests to the dedication beginning at 11 a.m. from the Forest City trailhead. Trail users who prefer to walk or bike to the site are welcome to do so.
Known as the D&H Extension, named for the former rail line that ran through the area, this three mile section has an unimproved stone surface that offers walkers, runners, and bikers a wide path to follow. This upper section is the only part of the trail that also accommodates snow mobiles and equestrian use. The southern trailhead is located near the Carbondale Industrial Park. The additional three miles create an access for trail users to the southern part of the Lackawanna Valley. The new section of trail will be used for the 5th annual Heritage Explorer Bike Tour which will be held on this section on June 14, 2014.
The Lackawanna Heritage Valley is developing this trail not only for recreation and transportation but also to interpret the historic and cultural life of the region. The D&H extension takes trail users along a rural part of the Lackawanna Valley where the trail crosses the Lackawanna River three times over newly re-decked railroad bridges.
The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail runs 40 miles along the Lackawanna River, beginning at the confluence with the Susquehanna in Pittston, joining the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) trail in Simpson, and continuing to Union Dale at the Stillwater Dam. From there, the trail extends north to the New York State border to complete the 70 mile trail system. The Heritage Trail is a wonderful community asset, used by thousands of people throughout the year for health and wellness, recreation, alternative transportation, access to the river and simple enjoyment of the area&#8217;s natural beauty.
