First Posted: 10/16/2013 In the past five years, the Greater Pittston Food Pantry has grown from serving 25 families per week to the present 80 households per week. A total of 869 families have registered over the past year. Due to the generous support of the local community, churches, schools and organizations the pantry offers milk, fresh produce, bread, meat, canned and boxed foods to registered, low income families.
The pantry&#8217;s services have been enhanced by the donation of a van, computers, stainless steel shelving, 2-door refrigerator and a walk-in freezer. As a member of &#8220;Feeding America,&#8221; a national network, the pantry receives the majority of its food from the Weinberg Regional Food Bank and the local Walmart to help families at &#8220;food risk.&#8221; Thirty volunteers pick up, sort, date, store, pack and distribute food weekly, utilizing three classrooms and hallways in the former Seton Catholic building.
Families whose income falls within the Federal Government&#8217;s Poverty Guidelines and who reside within any of the 15 communities which comprise the Pittston and Wyoming Area School Districts are eligible to receive food every five weeks if appointments are available.
