First Posted: 11/15/2013 The Diva Theater/Duryea Dinner Theater will present &#8220;Christmas Belles,&#8221; the story of the Futrelle family who are trying to put on their church&#8217;s Christmas program.
Set in the the small town of Fayro, Texas, the Futrelle sisters&#8212;Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye, are each dealing with a problem of their own. Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Christmas program from spiraling into chaos.
Fittingly, the play, in which most of the action takes place in a church, will begin its run at the United Methodist Church of Chinchilla Friday, Dec. 6.
&#8220;Because it&#8217;s set in a church hall, we&#8217;re going to leave the hall as it. We&#8217;re going to put up some Christmas lights&#8230;but they&#8217;re going to be coming in and out of that door, up and down that hallway, in and out of that kitchen, they&#8217;re going to be yelling and screaming. It&#8217;s crazy,&#8221; said director Paige Balitski.
&#8220;The writers of this play (Jessie Jones, Nicolas Hope and Jamie Wooten), they write very well for southern women. They wrote for the &#8216;Golden Girls,&#8217; so they have a real good handle on women characters. What makes the play funny is these people are very real. They don&#8217;t think they&#8217;re funny, it&#8217;s big hair and Christmas sweaters, cowboy boots and some twang. It&#8217;s interesting.&#8221;
Balitski credited the writing as one of the things that led her to the play, and after taking a look at the area&#8217;s theater landscape, she felt like it might be a good time to do a piece that most people wouldn&#8217;t be familiar with for the company&#8217;s holiday production.
&#8220;I&#8217;m all for traditional shows, I love them, but I find when everyone in the area is doing something really traditional that&#8217;s the time to do something that&#8217;s not known or nontraditional. And, they&#8217;ve been received fairly well. We&#8217;ve done &#8216;A Christmas Carol&#8217; and all of that. This one just struck me. I liked the way it read. I liked the characters.&#8221;
Balitski went on to say the play also has a nice moral at the end. She didn&#8217;t want to give it, or too much of the plot, away, but she is confident the audience will enjoy it.
&#8220;Christmas Belles&#8221; will be staged at the United Methodist Church of Chinchilla, 411 Layton Road., S. Abington Twp., Friday through Sunday, Dec. 6 through 8. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. Sunday shows begin at 2 p.m. Admission is $12 general admission and $10 for seniors and students.
The play will then travel to the Duryea Dinner Theater, 268 Main St., Duryea, Friday through Sunday, Dec. 13 through 16. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday with the show at 8 p.m., dinner begins at 1 p.m. with the show at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $25.
