DHS art students paint Meadows windows

<p>WRIGHT TWP. &#8212; Tanner Kahlau came rumbling around left tackle like he had a dozen times earlier in the night. This time, it was with the game on the line.</p><p>A moment earlier, Kahlau had found the end zone for the fourth time to pull Crestwood within a point of Coughlin with 50.4 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Comets elected to go for two and the win.</p><p>The Comets running back made the turn at the left sideline. He was hit by Jacob Soller. Then by Zach King.</p><p>One step forward. Two. And then down to the ground, short of the goal line.</p><p>Coughlin 42, Crestwood 41.</p><p>&#8220;It was the most tense play I&#8217;ve played this year,&#8221; Soller said. &#8220;I just saw him, and I was just hoping everyone was behind me to help me get him.&#8221;</p><p>King was indeed there for the help and the Crusaders (2-1) had stopped a frantic two-touchdown rally in the fourth quarter by the host Comets.</p><p>&#8220;They ran that play all day against us,&#8221; Coughlin coach Ciro Cinti said. &#8220;And our defense made one play at the end. That&#8217;s all that matters.&#8221;</p><p>The Coughlin defense also came up with five turnovers on the night, recovering four fumbles to go with an early interception by Soller. The Crusaders led 42-28 early in the fourth quarter, but the defending District 2 Class 3A champs weren&#8217;t going away.</p><p>Kahlau (22 carries, 232 yards, four touchdowns) had scored from 1 and 68 yards out in the first quarter and added a 3-yard touchdown with 7:45 to pull Crestwood within seven.</p><p>Coughlin drove down near the red zone, looking for the put-away score when the Comets&#8217; defense came up with the fumble recovery with 4:30 left to play.</p><p>Twelve plays and 72 yards later, Kahlau came up with a 5-yard touchdown to set up the decisive two-point try.</p><p>Though it came up short, the Comets (0-3) found a spark on offense that was missing the first two weeks in which they had just 27 total points.</p><p>With junior Lance Blass taking over at quarterback, the Comets hit some big plays in the passing game to make up for the turnovers. Blass finished 8 of 13 for 106 yards and two touchdowns, including a 25-yarder to Josh Malkemes on the final play of the first half that gave the Comets a 28-27 lead at the break.</p><p>Seamus Rother, who took most of the snaps at quarterback the first two weeks, had a 26-yard touchdown reception.</p><p>For Coughlin, Soller hit Nick Zalaffi for a 57-yard score. Soller (110 yards, two total TDs), King (109 yards, two TDs) and Jake Cole (104 yards, two TDs) all went over 100 yards rushing in the win.</p><p>But it took a very long time to close it out.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re used to this,&#8221; Cinti said with a smile and a shake of his head. &#8220;Your stomach&#8217;s in a knot. Three games this year and they all went down to the last minute, last second.</p><p>&#8220;Crestwood, give them a lot of credit. They played hard. Those kids played hurt and a lot of their players picked it up. I give (Comets coach Greg Myers) a lot of respect.
