Artists 'Grateful' for music fans

First Posted: 5/22/2013 The Third Anthracite Heritage Conference will be held June 1 at the Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
One of the highlights will be a presentation by Richard Healey, a professor of geography at the University of Portsmouth, England. He has been a student of anthracite history for more than three decades and wrote one of the defining books on the industry, &#8220;The Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Industry, 1860-1902 (2007).&#8221;
The day will begin with registration and refreshments at 8:30 a.m. followed by welcome at 9 a.m. by Robert Savakinus, President, Anthracite Heritage Museum and Iron Furnaces Associates; Chester Kulesa, Site Administrator Anthracite Heritage Museum and Scranton Iron Furnaces; Bode Morin, Eckley Miners Village.
Speakers include F. Charles Petrillo, on the topic of &#8220;The Hard Coal Navy: Susquehanna River Coal&#8221;; Richard G. Healey
on &#8220;Miners and Mining in Scranton during the Civil War: Preliminary Findings from the DL&W Payrolls Project&#8221;; Robert E. Hughes on &#8220;3D Modeling and Mapping of the Northern Anthracite Coal Fields and the Underground Mine Pools beneath the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys&#8221;; Darlene Miller-Lanning on &#8220;The Art and History of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company; and William A. Hastie, Sr. and Bob Wolensky on &#8220;Anthracite Labor Wars in the Northern Anthracite Field: Labor against Management and Labor against Labor during the 1920s and 1930s.&#8221;
A live music performance will be featred at 1:15 p.m. by The Hometown Boyz, including band members Joe Sweeney, Mike Haduck, Ed Haduck, Jim Reap and Mike Lavelle.
At 4 p.m. attendees will be invited to mingle, chat or visit the exhibitions and the museum store. The conference ends at 5 p.m. when the museum closes for the day.
