First Posted: 12/27/2013 One of my favorite quotes about the New Year is the following from Alfred Lord Tennyson: &#8220;Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering &#8216;it will be happier&#8217;&#8230;&#8221; Nice, right? To me the new year is full of hope, new beginnings and a good time to try new things. At the Dietrich we have a variety of opportunities for folks to explore in 2014.
How about experiencing visual arts? For adults and teens, Steve Colley will be teaching a new art class at the Dietrich called Pottery and Recycled Glass Creations. During this class series, students will learn how to create their own hand-built pottery and then use them as molds for casting recycled glass creations. Steve is a master potter and also creates gorgeous recycled glass artwork. Classes will be held on Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 6, 13, 20 and Feb. 3. Admission is $60 for the series and all materials are provided.
We will also be offering Open Studio and Portfolio Prep in January. During these sessions, students ages 13 through adults can work at their own pace with the medium of their choice whether it be pottery, sculpture, drawing or painting. Steve Colley will provide guidance and students will also have the opportunity to learn how to put together a portfolio for college, professional or personal reasons. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, Jan. 7, 14, 21 and Feb. 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. Admission is $15 per class or $60 for the series.
Amy and Steve Colley will also be bringing back the ever-popular All About Pottery & Sculpture for children. During this class, students will create with clay as they learn hand-building and sculpting techniques and work on potter&#8217;s wheels. I am always amazed at the speed at which children learn how to throw pots! We will have a class series for children ages five to eight years old on Wednesdays, Jan. 8, 15, 22 and Feb. 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Then on Tuesdays, Jan. 7, 14, 21, and Feb. 4, there will be All About Pottery & Sculpture sessions for students ages nine to twelve years old at the same time. The class series are $40 each and all materials are provided.
Or how about trying performing arts? In After School Theatre Arts, middle school and high school students will create their own script, props and costumes; learn about movement, lighting and sound, and perform for a live audience. Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 8 through Feb. 27 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Dietrich Theater with drama coach Jennifer Jenkins. The program is sponsored by the Overlook Estate Foundation, Walmart and Wells Fargo, and admission is free.
As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!
