First Posted: 4/10/2012 Rocky Sawyer threw a one-hitter Monday to lead the University of Scranton to a 3-0 shutout of host Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference baseball game. Sawyer struck out eight to help Scranton complete a three-game series sweep and improve to 5-4 in the conference and 12-9 overall. Susquehanna fell to 2-7 and 12-15. Michael Umerich, a freshman from Abington Heights, had three of Scranton's six hits and singled in a run in the sixth inning. Jared Musilli's two-out single in the third inning was the only hit off Sawyer. The Royals are tied for third place in the Landmark. In other action, Lackawanna College swept a doubleheader from Brookdale Community College, 5-2, 6-3. Matt Frei had two hits and drove in two runs in the opener. Mike Accardi had a double and triple in the second game. SOFTBALL Marywood University pounded winless Gwynedd-Mercy College, 10-0 and 9-0, in a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader. The first game ended in five innings and the second was stopped after six for the eight-run rule. The Pacers are 9-1 in the CSAC and 11-11 overall. Meghin Palmer went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs for Marywood in the first game. Jillian Flanagan doubled in two runs while winning pitcher Alexandra Stine drove in a run and scored another. Stine drew a two-hitter with five strikeouts. Flanagan tripled twice to drive in four runs in the second game. Katherine King threw a one-hitter and struck out four. CONFERENCE AWARD Scranton sophomore Caitlin McHenry repeated the Landmark Conference softball Player of the Week award. McHenry went 10-for-15 with a double, a home run and 11 RBI during a pair of doubleheader sweeps that extended the team's winning streak to eight and improved the record to 18-2. McHenry is batting .678 in the hitting streak. She leads the Landmark in slugging percentage (.940), ranks second in batting average (.560) and on-base percentage (.613) and is tied for third in RBI (32). SCHOOL AWARD Sophomore golfer Grant Gulick is the latest Scranton Athlete of the Week after shooting 76 to earn medalist honors at the Utica Invitational.
