Nature Center honors volunteer

<p>AVOCA &#8212; The Corporate Angel Network provides free flights for cancer patients by utilizing empty seats on corporate jets, allowing them access to the best possible treatments for their specific ailments, regardless of where those treatments might be in the United States. The network helps people and Aviation Technologies, Inc. (ATI) will be helping the network.</p><p>Featuring games, planes and automobiles, ATI and Pocono Mountain Street Rods will present the inaugural Wings and Wheels event from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.</p><p>The event will include a car show, vintage aircraft on display, airplane rides, food vendors, live music and raffles. All proceeds will benefit the Corporate Angel Network.</p><p>Mike Gallagher, chief financial officer of ATI, is responsible for the conception and organization of the event.</p><p>ATI is a private sector aviation company located on Hangar Road at the airport, which charters private flights and offers flight lessons to prospective pilots. Alison Montone, executive assistant at ATI, offerred a perspective on Gallagher&#8217;s inspiraton for Wings and Wheels.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something I believe Mike was passionate about, being in aviation and seeing the need for transportation for cancer patients,&#8221; Montone said.</p><p>Among other vintage aircrafts, the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation will display the Spirit of Freedom, a Douglas C-54E, which it uses as an air museum to display artifacts and information about the Berlin Airlift.</p><p>The foundation, located in Farmingdale, New Jersey, is dedicated to the memory of the Berlin Airlift, in which American and British planes, starting in 1948 and continuing for a year, brought food and supplies to West Berlin to overcome a road and rail blockade set up by the Soviet Union.</p><p>The foundation&#8217;s website, <a href="http://www.spiritoffreedom.org">www.spiritoffreedom.org</a> calls the airlift the greatest humanitarian/aviation event in history.</p><p>Pocono Mountain Street Rods and additional car owners will display their classic and current vehicles at the car show. Registration is open to any specific years, makes or models. Owners may preregister at <a href="http://www.AVPwingsandwheels.com">www.AVPwingsandwheels.com</a> for $10 or for $15 on the day of the event.</p><p>Participants and patrons are invited to drive or fly in to the event. Fly-ins will be offered 25 cents off every gallon of fuel for their return trip.</p><p>Montone said one of the vehicles displayed will be a 1933 Ford truck.</p><p>Sponsors of the event include Mohegan Sun Pocono, PNC Bank and Kane Trucking, among others. Sponsors will donate services and items to be raffled such as buckets of car care items from Cee Kay&#8217;s Auto, gift certificates from Mariano&#8217;s La Puccia, Michael Valenti&#8217;s Restaurant, Cafe Italia and Bobby O&#8217;s; and a tandem skydive from Sky&#8217;s The Limit Skydiving Center.</p><p>Live musical entertainment will be provided throughout the event and Elsa, the Snow Queen from Disney&#8217;s &#8220;Frozen,&#8221; will be on hand to provide fun for children.</p><p>Gallagher was out of the country on business and unable to comment on event preparations, but Montone said he and his team have worked hard to make the event a successful one.</p><p>Montone explained funds raised from the benefit will go toward helping cancer patients locally and throughout the surrounding region.</p><p>&#8220;If a patient is local and the only way they can get their treatment is (by flying to) California, (Corporate Angel Network) will fly that patient,&#8221; Montone said.</p><style>
