H.S. tennis: Pittston Area edges Crestwood

KINGSTON &#8212; Sam Brumagin had two clear shots in overtime.The first one just sneaked over the crossbar. The second skidded left of the net.Luckily for the Crestwood sophomore, there was a third opportunity. And this time, she couldn&#8217;t be denied.Brumagin took a nice feed from Bella Termini, dribbled down the left side of the turf at Spartan Stadium and beat the Wyoming Valley West keeper on her right side. It was the game-winner with nine seconds left in overtime as Crestwood earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory Wednesday night.It was the second-annual Coaches vs. Cancer soccer match at Valley West. The Spartans, their coaches and the Crestwood coaches wore orange to honor former Valley West standout Taylor Thoryk, who was diagnosed with leukemia in the fall of her junior year in 2013. She has since graduated and is enrolled at Luzerne County Community College. Proceeds and donations were made to the American Cancer Society to honor Thoryk.&#8220;This is a big night for our team,&#8221; Valley West head coach Deb Stevens said. &#8220;We wanted to start this and honor Taylor. Our girls played so hard, and played so well. Unfortunately, Crestwood just came out ahead at the very end.&#8221;A game of inches. Just look at the 10 minutes of overtime.Brumagin&#8217;s first shot just cleared the crossbar by two inches with 3:15 left.Less than 30 seconds later, the sophomore took another chance. The ball rocketed off her right foot, looked like a spot-on goal and then bent left at the last second.&#8220;It&#8217;s really been an emotional roller coaster the last two days,&#8221; Crestwood head coach Russ Kile said. &#8220;It was so relieving when that ball hit the net.&#8221;The last one with 9.7 seconds remaining slipped past Spartans keeper Emma Grimes. The freshman was sensational on the night, stopping 16 of the 20 shots she faced.It was the second straight match where Crestwood won in overtime. On Tuesday, Termini scored six minutes into overtime to stun Dallas, 2-1.&#8220;I did not expect it. We have such powerhouses up top. I&#8217;m just glad that I could help out,&#8221; Brumagin said. &#8220;The first two, it was rough because they were so close. You just have to keep trying.&#8221;Back to the game of inches because Valley West had so many chances in the first half.Riley O&#8217;Neil played a beautiful pass from Lauren Thoryk in the 28th minute, but her shot missed sneaking in the left corner of the net by inches.One minute later, Audrey Williams ripped a shot from 20 yards out &#8211; only to watch it deflect off the crossbar.&#8220;It was just a matter of inches and seconds,&#8221; Stevens said. &#8220;There was just nine seconds left. They are an awesome team with power. Our girls did a great job with communication and passing. It just came down to that last nine seconds. That was the difference. We had some momentum, but their girl made a nice shot to win the game.&#8221;Crestwood needed just five minutes to break a scoreless tie in the second half. Termini took a forward pass from Chyanne Cook and beat the keeper low on the right side as the Comets led 1-0 with 35:13 left.Valley West finally got one to sneak in with 4:50 left. Sophomore Tiffany Michalek played a ball off the rebounded missed shot, and fired one past Comet keeper McKenna Mera, knotting the score at 1.It stood that way until Brumagin&#8217;s winner with 9.7 seconds left in OT.&#8220;It&#8217;s frustrating when you are shooting, and you are not getting them on frame or getting those follow-up shots,&#8221; Kile said. &#8220;We tried to keep the girls in check in terms of emotions. We wanted to stay relaxed and play our game.&#8221;BOYS SOCCERCoughlin 6, Meyers 0David Cortez finished with a goal and two assists and the Crusaders held Meyers to two shots in front of keeper Steve Johnson for the shutout. George Oko had a goal and an assist.David Torres made 10 saves for the Mohawks.Holy Redeemer 6,MMI Prep 0Josh Perta scored a hat trick and Eric Schramm, Lucas Barnak and Josh Wychock each scored a goal to push Holy Redeemer to a shut-out win over MMI Prep. Anthony Khoudary and Richard Huey, the Royals goalie tandem, made four saves in the win.The Preppers goalkeeper, TJ Jankouskas, made 27 saves during the contest.Wyoming Valley West 3,Crestwood 0Mike Bazadona netted two goals and an assist and Mitch Folgash scored the other goal for Wyoming Valley West as they shut out Crestwood.
